I had a good long look at crystal skulls a couple of years ago for a potential documentary project.
The official line is that they are all C19th or early C20th fakes. Wiki provides a decent introduction to that official position.
However, many Maya holy men still claim crystal skulls as authentic Mayan artefacts.
I suspect that crystal skulls may have their roots in pre-Columban societies such as the Aztec and the Maya, but the currently known ones are European fakes.
I await a scientific investigation of the Ahnenerbe 's crystal skull. There are historically documented SS, and probably Ahnenerbe, expeditions to central and south America in the 1930s. It would be rather pleasing if Himmler was sold a lemon...
