Peter Levenda [in Sinister Forces: a grimoire of American political witchcraft (Book 1: The Nine), TrineDay 2005] writes of many of the "wandering bishops", those strange characters who seek consecration in unorthodox congregations and churches, sometimes created for them or by them.
One such individual was David Ferrie, whom we meet in many roles and books associated with the Kennedy assassination and in the tale of "Dr. Mary's Monkey".

And then there is the case of Bishop Earl Anglin Lawrence James, excommunicated from the old Roman Catholic Church in 1945, "Honorary Atty. Gen." of the State of Louisiana, and recipient of the Eloy Alfaro Grand Cross for his "extraordinary achievements and accomplishments… within the framework of the services rendered by him to his fellow human beings and to the cause of international peace" in a ceremony at the Hotel Astor whose master of ceremonies was a psychiatrist; prior recipients of the same award were Pres. Eisenhower, Pres. Truman, Pres. Hoover, Sen. Lyndon Johnson, Governors Rockefeller and Averell Harriman, Generals MacArthur, Crittenberger, Devers, and another wandering bishop, the Rght Rev. Benjamin Eckhardt of Canada.
"At all of this to espionage activities and you have a perfect fruit salad of paranoia, power and prestige, mixing secret government work with secret rituals and the manipulation of those sinister forces we have been studying. The secret handshake of the cult and the secret code of the intelligence agency: they both invoke the power relationships that are beyond the reach of the ordinary human being. Levenda tops his "perfect fruit salad" by noting that Dr. James Monroe, a former Air Force officer and MK-Ultra project leader in brainwashing studies, in charge of the funds of the Human Ecology Society, informed Dr. Ewen Cameron, after hearing the news of the assassination of Kennedy, that the CIA sponsorship of his program was terminated.
