Quote:What is starting to happen is that inventors are publishing their work, instead of patenting it and keeping it secret. More and more, people are giving away information on these technologies in books, videos and websites.
I think this is the key. In the past energy companies have bought up the patents and sat on them, disappeared them, making money from their extractive energy sales in the mean time. The Creative Commons licences and Copy Left have given publishers and others more say in how their work is used. The information wants to be free. I also think it is a lot safe for inventors sitting on revolutionary ideas to just get it out there and not keep it a secret. That way other people can also collaboratively work on it and add to it and make things even better. Crowd sourcing for funding is also an option when that is needed as it often is.
