Very interesting article in Probe by Armstrong on the Tippit shooting. By the way, if you've not yet read Harvey and Lee I think you are missing a lot - no matter how you 'come down' on his hypothesis, the book is a must have! [packed to bursting with important and mind-blowing information]
Good column Peter, thanks. It's an--in a nutshell--version of Armstrong's book. Not that I've managed to get through the entire book.
The column has details I hadn't known, for example:
"On the morning of November 22nd, J.D. Tippit hugged his oldest son Allen and said, "no matter what happens today, I want you to know that I love you." Such overt signs of affection toward his son were uncharacteristic of Tippit. This was the last time young Allen Tippit saw his father alive."
I've long wavered on whether or not Tippit was in on the plot or not. If true, this quote gives the impression he was in on something, something big.
Right now I'm leaning towards thinking, at least in part because of this Armstrong column, that Tippit:
-Was suckered into being Harvey Oswald's ride to the Texas Theater.
-Was killed - and Oswald's wallet was planted by his body - to provide a pointer to the patsy. (Though they were both patsies. "Poor dumb cop.")
-Was used for body parts for the alterations of President Kennedy's body. I think it's likely that Tippit was chosen because of his obvious resemblence to JFK.
