One of the most interesting parts of 'French Connection' is the scroll at the end where it makes it pretty clear that the guys who were up to their necks in kilos of heroin basically escaped. The director is trying say something there. He's taking the role of blue collar cop Egan and his working class protest about risking their necks only to have highly-connected crooks walk free. But the protest clearly contains a deeper political message aimed at those who let them walk free.
