In reference to Lauren's question above about Dorothy Thompson's essay. There were a lot of "nice" people who became Naziis. There are fascists in all types of people. Isn't Fascism the last refuge of Capitalism? It doesn't seem to matter what your language or social status or cultural or religious standards are because the determining factor appears to be the economic history of your nation or society.
At the idividual's level there can be those who resist and oppose fascism, as many in Germany did. There were German Catholics, Protestants, Jews, atheists, etc., who were eliminated by storm troopers and the concentration camps. And some who escaped to other counries.
