Don Jeffries Wrote:Charles (and Monk) have gone from questioning the validity of Albert Doyle's online persona to directly accusing him of being impersonated by a person or persons unknown. For those of us who don't have the ability to determine such things from examining posts on an internet forum, Charles' emphatic self- confidence about this provides insufficient proof.
Don't you have the capability to track the IP addresses of those who post here? If all of Doyle's posts come from the same one or two addresses, this is a strong indication he is one person, posting probably from home and work. If there are multiple IP addresses, then you've found Thoreau's trout in the milk. Or you could just postulate that a strange cabal is taking turns posting from the same computer.
Why don't you do this and let us know what you discover? Or, you can continue to cryptically refer to "his" mysterious nonexistence, while he conveniently refrains from protesting.
Don,
Given the availability of technical (see Phil's post above) and non-technical (material simply e-mailed to the "beard," who then posts it from his/her computer) disguise options, the only way we can try to determine if more than one person is posting under a single identity is to conduct a forensic audit, if you will, of the posts.
The historic "Albert Doyle" has been a presence on DPF for some time now -- long enough for "his" literary style (and lack thereof) to be established.
The lengthy "Doyle" posts on this thread exhibit little if any stylistic similarities to long-established "Doyle" posts. They also present us with a very interesting internal inconsistency: lengthy, cogent sentences (boasting a sophisticated vocabulary) that are poorly punctuated -- as if the real writer is attempting to dumb down his or her style in support of the "Albert Doyle" charade.
By the way, you may recall that a few years ago, during my regrettable EF period, I outed the "Colby" entity by demonstrating multiple examples of "his" inconsistent language.
I share Greg's suspicions that Jim Fetzer may be the ghost in "Doyle's" machine. But I'm certain that the ghost exists.
And if I am proven wrong, then I shall shout my apologies from the cyber-rooftops of our global village.

If an individual, through either his own volition or events over which he had no control, found himself taking up residence in a country undefined by flags or physical borders, he could be assured of one immediate and abiding consequence: He was on his own, and solitude and loneliness would probably be his companions unto the grave.
