Peter, I have been aware of and have helped inform others about that "longterm project of the ruling elite", and we do need to counter-act it in our personal lives, our families, our friendships, our communities; then, maybe, it gets to our national level. It sounds like you are a reader of Derrick Jensen, and I hear echoes from my blog.
Three tidbits from my blog:
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
From www.whatreallyhappened.com
"This focus on money and power may do wonders in the marketplace, but it creates a tremendous crisis in our society. People who have spent all day learning how to sell themselves and to manipulate others are in no position to form lasting friendships or intimate relationships...
Many Americans hunger for a different kind of society -- one based on principles of caring, ethical and spiritual sensitivity, and communal solidarity. Their need for meaning is just as intense as their need for economic security."

I received an offer in the mail:
$20 for 12 issues of the recently-reborn Poetry Magazine.
http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetryma...index.html
The editor, Christian Winman, enclosed a card that said
“Let us remember …. that in the end we go to poetry for one reason, so that we might more fully inhabit our lives and the world in which we live them, and that if we more fully inhabit these things, we might be less apt to destroy both.”
***
So how do we transform our anger about assassinations, false flag attacks, torture, war crimes, corruption, war-mongering for profit, and the psychopathology of our current leadership into something that speaks to and sustains joy, community, and life? That is perhaps an inappropropriate discussion for this forum, or at least requires a new thread.

"Where is the intersection between the world's deep hunger and your deep gladness?"
