Paul, that's why I used that lead-in about the hall of mirrors; sometimes there is the introduction of smoke and fog into that hall.
Without debating yours or anyone else's assessment of gatekeeper x or gatekeeper y, I tend to agree with you quite strongly. I am not quite sure I understand Chomsky's position on 9/11 [I don't read a lot of Chomsky], whether it is disagreement, denial, or just some sense that there are matters more important than that requiring our attention; in any case, it's avoidant in behavior, which tells me something right away and, as many others have said, 9/11 is a major doorway into deep politics. Gatekeeping now requires more hands than ten Dutch boys at the dike can muster.
My own "crap-detector" isn't necessarily as sharp as the next guy's, particularly if and when they have studied the question in depth, and I think I understand something about the human mind and how it can be fooled, as well as misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda. But with a lot of people working hard to discredit others, or masking their intent effectively, one of the ways I learn is to toss something out there and see who shoots at it .. and with what ammunition.
Maybe people -- especially pundits and politicians -- should be required to have, like aircraft in the skies, IFF transponders that transmit readable data that describes who they are, where they are coming from, and where they are going.

When Senator Whomever de Wherever stands up in debate, or in the media, some tag should appear that shows the source of his campaign cash, his voting record as seen by multiple groups, and his other associations and membership -- like a marker from a wargame [ http://www.jrcooper.com/wargameart.htm ].
