Calls Attention to Government Spying Program

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden continues to cool his heels in Russia to escape prosecution in the United States, but his profile is rising in the nation's capital on buses plying the streets of Washington, D.C.The bus campaign to call attention to Snowden's dilemma is in its second day, according to the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF), a D.C-based public interest group.
The PCJF is behind the "Thank You Ed Snowden" ads plastered on the side of city Metrobuses, part of a broader public advocacy campaign to oppose the NSA's "massive, covert spying and bulk surveillance programs." The effort includes a letter writing campaign to Congress.
"The NSA placed malware on more than 50,000 computer networks worldwide. Yes, the NSA, using taxpayers money, infected more than 50,000 computer networks with malicious software designed to steal sensitive information," the group said in a statement.
"We are acting now because the government spying agencies are truly out of control," it added.
Going forward, the group plans to expand the bus campaign in Washington. The Partnership is also filing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) demands with the NSA, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and the FBI.
The effort is designed to get more information on their spying programs that could possibility lead to a legal challenge on constitutional grounds.
Snowden, 30, a computer specialist, former CIA employee and former NSA contractor, disclosed as many as 200,000 classified documents to the news media outlining the broad extent of intelligence gathering activities by the super-secret spy agency.
He's considered a fugitive from justice by U.S. authorities, who have charged him with espionage and theft of government property. He faces life in prison if convicted on all counts.
