As do I Pete. It's not believeable.

He was former DEA and was sent to Iran unofficially by a group inside the CIA to investigate cigarette smuggling? Nah. It sounds to me like they might have been trying to get info about Iran and the drugs trade and didn't want the bosses or others to know about it does't it.

His real mission could be almost anything. But one thing is for sure...the best way to get killed by the CIA [even if you are a current or former intelligence person] is to try to do an 'unofficial' secret operation...which will NOT be secret to the NSA nor CIA.....not for long. I'm sure most countries deal in drugs - as does the USA. That's no secret, if not in the MSM. I suspect that this had much larger and more significant reasons behind it...but can't guess.....he could have been meeting someone from the mainland on almost any kind of thing or doing espionage or even wet ops on someone on the island...or maybe he was to be infiltrated to the mainland...it really could be anything....but now caught and captive, the US is doing a limited modified hangout and trying to find a way to 'trade' for his return. If he was rogue, they'd let him rot.
