While some medics or ordinary soldiers who found some morphine left by fleeing or dead medics might have abused it, all sides had morphine and still do in battle. It is used for pain relief in the case of massive wounds or broken bones, etc. It is the only painkiller, basically, that will relieve the pain of massive bodily trauma. I don't consider it much abused for fun - although it may have occasionally been.
