Think of the type of readers New Yorker gets. Generalist, wannabees, status, don't read a lot of history usually, but some. Can play a useful blocking and scrambling function.

Are there some trap doors that stand out here that might be used as "O really " moments to call the credibility of the New yorker in question but ALSO in a way that would get the New Yorker readers reading the first two sentences of your post.
