The author of that article thinks that in honestly functioning democracy "independent researchers" (i.e. conspiracy theorists) would present their ideas to the public and that would encourage "vigorous public debate." To me, it seems that "vigorous public debate" is precisely the thing that all this ridicule, and these dark hints of contagion and violence, is supposed to foreclose.
Couple that with the "War on Whistleblowers" begun under GW Bush and wholeheartedly continued by the Obama Administration, and you have what looks like to me a coordinated attempt by the highest levels of government and the media to operate toward a common goal. Sounds like "Operation Mockingbird" is sill singing along.
I wonder what on Earth "they" are so afraid of? Do "they" really suppose that there is a secret out there to be stumbled upon that is so dangerous that it will rend the fabric of our society? Talk about a nutty idea!
