Here is a link to maps showing how in early August the breakaway republics were on their last legs, and now how the whole thing is reversed dramatically -- to say the least. There is some speculation that Putin will soon be able to drive to the Crimea. No wonder Ukraine is being fast tracked to NATO membership.

Ukrainian forces are in blue; the militia's are in red. Another thing, it appears that as the pink areas were shrinking, suddenly the southern most area in white evaporates. That was called the Southern Cauldron. Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers died, many of whom were forced into battle against their will. Then another cauldron formed and it is still being "cleaned up." It was called the Southern Cauldron 2.0.
