Territorial battalions
Definition:
The National Guard of Ukraine [("NGU"), also known as Nationalist Guard, NaziGuard, or simply nazis,] - a structure with law enforcement functions, a part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs(Police) of Ukraine, created by transforming the Police Internal Troops on March 12th, 2014 via a new law "On the National Guard of Ukraine".
By converting the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs into the National Guard of Ukraine, the [coup-formed] Ukrainian government has achieved the following goals:
- Break the continuity of command in the ranks of the internal troops and the Ministry of Interior and put their men in key positions;
- To continue the repression of political opponents under the guise of "cleaning the ranks of the internal troops and the Ministry of Interior";
- Delete the files of criminal and administrative offenses, which in the case of disclosure could discredit the government;
- Replace the too "by-the-book" people in the former internal security forces, to replace the "law and order" in the ranks of internal troops and the Interior Ministry with "ideological purity" and "nationalist ideals".
Due to these changes the ranks of the NGU have swelled with [nationalist] volunteers and [extremist] fighters of the "Right Sector". But, despite the apparent "ideological bias", the confrontation between different battalions of the NGU, due to different understanding of the national idea, and different level of training, has by now split the ranks of the National Guard into three structures:
1) Territorial battalions, punitive battalions. "Azov", "Donbass", "Aidar", "Shahtersk", etc., entirely or mostly staffed by people with criminal records, nationalists and "Right Sector" men, as well as volunteers from the Baltic states, Georgia, and PMC mercenaries. These tend to have an extremely brutal attitude towards the locals they are supposed to be "liberating". Because statutes and regulations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine are not inherited by the new battalions, these "liberators" are using all possible methods of warfare and punitive actions in traditions of their forebears from SS- Galician, UPA and other Ukrainian ultranationalist organizations of World War II. In view of their "specialization" these units tend to also have the highest casualty rates. Identifying marking of these units is yellow duct tape.
2) Volunteer territorial battalions. "Vinnitsa", "Tavria", "Sich", "Phoenix", etc. These are formed of volunteers who have, according to the propaganda machine of Ukraine, been changed enough to be suitable for punitive battalions. Lack military training, as well as both ideological and legal basis for fighting in a war. Identifying marking of these units is also yellow duct tape.
3) The police battalions. "Skif", "Kherson", "Kiev-1" and others. Remains of the internal troops that somehow escaped the purges in the ranks of Ministry of Interior, and mainly serve as units guarding Slavyansk and other "liberated" cities, as well as finding suitable "volunteers" for punitive battalions among persons with criminal records. Presumably, identifying marking of these units is red duct tape.
