We have some strange domestic property occupancy laws here in the UK. They make it pretty difficult to evict squatters who occupy an otherwise non-occupied property and refuse requests by the owner or anyone else to leave. I haven't got all the details to hand but briefly, a strict and convoluted procedure has to be gone through involving the courts, which makes it impossible to regain vacant possession in less than about 2-3 months from its start. Force (in the form of the police and court appointed bailiffs only) can only be used on successful completion of the process and any attempted use of force in the meantime is likely to land the perpetrator in prison. In this case the owners of the property - that prissy but dearly beloved bureaucratic NGO the 'National Trust' - seem to have whizzed through the process in double-quick time.
