Quote:My Lai epitomizes the Vietnam War, not only because every returning soldier can tell of similar incidents, if on a somewhat smaller scale, but also because it is an expression of the psychological state characteristic for Americans fighting that war. It illustrates the murderous progression of deception and self-deception -- from political policy to military tactics to psychological aberration.
Mr. Lifton is full of BS.No,not every returning soldier can tell of similar incidents big or small.I am NOT AWARE of any unlawful mishandlings of the Vietnamese people or VC/NVA.Did some shit happen?Yes,that is the way in all wars.In Vietnam atrocities were commited on all sides. The VC/NVA killed many civilians also.If you want to talk about prisoner abuse,I could tell you about one of our men who was captured and held in Cambodia for two years.Believe me those guys up in the Hanoi Hilton were lucky to be there.
My Lai will always be an oozing wound for ALL Vietnam Veterans. We are judged by it.We are ostrasized by it.We are all bloodied by it.That's the way it is,I accept that.
