My working hypothesis is that specific groups - eg the Mansonites - and specific events - eg Altamont - were targeted with what Mae Brussell and John Judge would describe as "military acid". An acid that didn't expand the mind, but instead led to violent psychosis.
Akin to the drug the GIs were given in the excellent movie, Jacob's Ladder.
It's clear as day that the Symbionese Liberation Army were a Phoenix Program nightmare let loose on the streets of mainland USA.
