America's Worst Charities

by Abby Zimet

[Image: charity_screen-shot-2012-01-12-at-12.49.39-am.png]

Nothing quite like ripping off dying kids in the name of personal profit. The Tampa Bay Times, working for a year in collaboration with the California-based Center for Investigative Reporting, offers an explosive look at America's 50 worst "charities," which over the last ten years have raised over $1 billion but given mere pennies on each dollar - and sometimes nothing at all - to those it claims to help. Through accounting tricks, consulting fees and just plain lies, charities - many cancer and veteran-themed - instead make millions for their operators and corporate solicitors. Dante must have saved his tenth circle of hell for these people.

America's Worst Charities is the result of a yearlong collaboration between the Tampa Bay Times and the California-based Center for Investigative Reporting, the nation's largest and longest serving nonprofit newsroom dedicated to watchdog journalism. CNN joined the partnership in March.

As a former social worker I know this all too well. Many of the charities are just giant money sucks for the lawyers and adminstrators. While others are made up of decent and dedicated people trying their best to make a difference.

My advice for any one who wants to donate. Do not make a general donation to any organisation. It will just go on bloated administration and fancy cars and lawyers fees and into church coffers. Very unlikely to go where you want your dollar to do the most good. Donate for a specific thing, such as building a new well in such and such village, a new dialysis machine, new books for a disadvantaged school or funds to pay for the wages of two new nurses or teachers, a new bus to transport pensioners to their medical appointments or community activities etc.

Great article by the way Keith Thanks for posting it. So pleased they also listed things like the lawyers they use. This is what good journalism is.

Someone been reading Dan Brown by any chance, Keith?

To be honest I have. The image is compelling, I think. It reminds me of Luke Skywalker walking into the dark forest. Ditto, Tolkein's Mirkwood - likewise many other too. But since the journey into the dark forest and hence down into Hell is the only sure pathway to Paradiso, I can only conclude that these people are a long way off that sort of contemplation...

For me, a more telling image of Dante's journey is the Gate of Hell (Canto III) by Dmitri Semakov:

The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.

I actually had to look up Dan Brown to see who he is....Ok,"The Da Vinci Code".lol

Yeah, that picture came with the article.Abbey getting all mystical on us.Ha!

No,this story just brought back the memory of me sending a $95 dollar check last year for a breast cancer charity. Then a week later the head of this charity announces that they will oppose planned parenthood.

No more charities for me......
