CD87 p92 - SS tells us the rifle Kleins shipped to Hidell was a 91(T)roop (S)pecial carbine
#61
Did anyone ever approach Kleins' gunsmith and ask him if he was processing carbines or short rifles at the time C2766 was supposedly ordered by Oswald?
Mr. HILL. The right rear portion of his head was missing. It was lying in the rear seat of the car. His brain was exposed. There was blood and bits of brain all over the entire rear portion of the car. Mrs. Kennedy was completely covered with blood. There was so much blood you could not tell if there had been any other wound or not, except for the one large gaping wound in the right rear portion of the head.

I recall that the guy who added the scopes to the rifles said that he had only worked on 36" rifles, and he had to ask the FBI where they wanted the scope mounted when he made them a "duplicate" 91/38. Can't recall if that was because Klien's didn't have the 40' ones till later or not.

I have heard this before, too, Drew. In all honesty, there is something quite wrong with this story. All Carcano rifles, be they long rifles, short rifles or carbines, share identical actions. If a gunsmith had mounted any number of scopes on the carbines, the scope would likely go on the same location on the short rifles.

We are left to wonder if the gunsmith was either being extremely cautious, or truly was ignorant about mounting that scope on that rifle (which implies that he hadn't done it before). I also recollect that there was 1 more mounting holes on c2766 than necessary, which also implies either that a different scope entirely had been mounted there before, or than the gunsmith was inept. Either way, it doesn't help the government's standard explanation.

Or that the plotters wanted a rifle with which to frame Oswald but didn't realize the 36 inch model had expired and the 40 inch model was now the only model available. They then hastily installed a scope on their own.

As John reminded me...

I HAVE LONG THOUGHT THAT, BECAUSE LEE OSWALD TRIED TO BUY A RIFLE FROM ROBERT MCKEOWN ON SEPT 1, 1963, THAT THE CHOICE OF THE MURDER WEAPON HAD NOT BEEN MADE.
THEREFORE, WHY WOULD THE FBI PLACE THE KLEIN'S ORDER IN FEBRUARY, 1963--MANY MONTHS BEFORE JFK'S TRIP TO DALLAS WAS ANNOUNCED ??

He makes a very good point... My guess is that there really was a Feb 22 shipment to Kleins, and the FBI reworked the June 1962 C2766/100 rifle shipment documents to make them work for Feb...
The 10 packing slips only indicate "38 E"... and the paperwork from Kleins to Crescent to Rupp, and Rupp's removal an prep of the rifles MUST have occurred prior to June 1962.... All we have is from Aug 1962 forward....
And not a single other Kleins document for any other M91TS or FC rifle order received or shipped...

Sorry to reheat this old debate, but I found this today looking for witnesess to Frazier driving Oswald to the shooting range.

Sterling Wood, a 13 year old boy (in 1963), in his Warren Commission interview, claims that the gun used by "Oswald" at the firing range was different than the gun possessed by the FBI because the strap mounts on the firing range gun were on the bottom, and the FBI gun has them on the side.
"All that is necessary for tyranny to succeed is for good men to do nothing." (unknown)

James Tracy: "There is sometimes an undue amount of paranoia among some conspiracy researchers that can contribute to flawed observations and analysis."

Gary Cornwell (Dept. Chief Counsel HSCA): "A fact merely marks the point at which we have agreed to let investigation cease."

Alan Ford: "Just because you believe it, that doesn't make it so."
