Over 1000 Nazis Employed by the US During the Cold War

Otto von Bolschwing of Nazi Germany and the Silicon Valley According to government records that have been recently disclosed and varied interviews, it appears that in the years subsequent to World War II, the CIA, the FBI and other US agencies solicited the help of at least 1000 Nazis, many of whom had war criminal records as spies during the Cold War. In an article published by the New York Times, it was revealed that as recently as the 1990s, these agencies buried the fact that the government had ties to some still living in America.




Records that have now been declassified show that officials such as J. Edgar Hoover of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Allen Dulles of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) tenaciously recruited former Nazis "of all ranks as secret, anti-Soviet "assets" during the apex of the Cold War during the 1950s, according to the NY Times.
The leaders of the government agencies held the belief that the "intelligence value" that these former Nazis had against the seemingly intractable US nemesis known as the USSR "outweighed what one official called "moral lapses" in their service to the Third Reich," according to the Times.
Offering an example of such practices, the Times noted that one former SS officer who was hired by the intelligence agency as a reconnaissance agent in the 1950s was guilty of "war crimes" as concluded by the agency itself after an investigation.
Despite the fact that concrete evidence of the government's connection to Nazi spies came to the fore in a public manner during the 1970s, recently disclosed information reveals that aggressive government recruitment of Nazis was far more significant and pervasive than had been previously known. The report also indicated that officials did everything in their power to "conceal those ties for at least a half-century after the war," according to the Times report.
Records that are now declassified, along with interviews with a multitude of current and former government officials and requests made via the Freedom of Information Act are the predicate for the report issued by the Times.
When questioned about this by the Nazi hunters of Justice Department in 1980, FBI officials refused to reveal any information about 16 suspected Nazis living in the United States. The Times reported that memos show that the FBI displayed resistance to a prosecutorial request for records from the bureau on the Nazis in question, "because the 16 men had all worked as F.B.I. informants, providing leads on Communist "sympathizers." At the time, five of the men were still active informants, according to the Times.
Another bureau memo focused on the perceived need for "protecting the confidentiality of such sources of information to the fullest possible extent."
The Times also reported that in 1994 prosecutors were pressured to close an investigation into the role of an ex-Nazi spy from the Boston area who had been implicated in a massacre of tens of thousands of Jews in Lithuania by a CIA attorney, according to statements made by a government official.
Some spies for the United States had worked at the highest levels for the Nazis, according to the Times.
Otto von Bolschwing, an SS officer who had been a top aide to Adolf Eichmann, an architect of the "Final Solution" was one such US spy. Subsequent to the conclusion of World War II, the CIA had dispatched him to Europe to for spy duty, but records indicate that he and his family were relocated to New York City in 1954. The agency justified this move as "a reward for his loyal postwar service and in view of the innocuousness of his [Nazi] party activities," according to their own admission.
Yet after the war, the C.I.A. not only hired him as a spy in Europe, but relocated him and his family to New York City in 1954, records show. The move was seen as a "a reward for his loyal postwar service and in view of the innocuousness of his [Nazi] party activities," the agency wrote.
Gus von Bolschwing, 75, the son of the SS officer said that his father's relationship with the CIA was mutually beneficial because of the threats that loomed because of the Cold War.
In an interview, he said: "They used him, and he used them. It shouldn't have happened. He never should have been admitted to the United States. It wasn't consistent with our values as a country."
Memos show that von Bolschwing sought the help of the CIA in 1960, when Israeli Mossad agents had discovered that Eichmann had been living in Argentina since the war's end in fear that they might come after him. Records indicate that the CIA was worried about information that could possibly surface about von Bolschwing being linked to Eichmann as a "collaborator and fellow conspirator and that the resulting publicity may prove embarrassing to the U.S," according to an agency official.
In 1961, the agency told von Bolschwing that they would provide protection and not disclose his ties to Eichmann, according to records that have been revealed. He lived in freedom for the next 20 years before being discovered for his role in wartime by federal prosecutors. In 1981, he agreed to forfeit his US citizenship and died months later.
According to Richard Breitman, a Holocaust historian at American University, the American military, the C.I.A., the F.B.I. and other agencies used at least 1,000 ex-Nazis and collaborators as spies and informants after the war. Breitman was on a government-appointed team that declassified war-crime records.
Norman Goda, a historian from the University of Florida who was also on the declassification team said that "many records remain classified even today, making a complete count impossible," according to the Times.
"U.S. agencies directly or indirectly hired numerous ex-Nazi police officials and East European collaborators who were manifestly guilty of war crimes," he said. "Information was readily available that these were compromised men."

Files show CIA gave jobs to Nazi criminals

The British and US governments used known Nazi war criminals after the Second World War as spies, going to elaborate lengths to protect their identities. Previously classified documents yesterday confirmed that some were even granted American citizenship.

The newly released CIA, FBI and Army records show that at least five associates of the notorious Gestapo leader, Adolf Eichmann, worked for the CIA. In addition, the records show that 23 war criminals or Nazis were approached by the CIA for recruitment.

In other cases, the CIA, and other agencies who saw former Nazi war criminals and sympathisers as useful in fighting the rise of CommunSan Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome's father, Judge William Newsome, was a business partner of Nazi Otto von Bolschwing, the SS officer who settled in the U.S. after the war.

Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to screen for government secrets any evidence submitted by Otto von Bolschwing, 71 years old, who is accused of serving as an adviser to Adolf Eichmann in persecuting Jews.

Rodney Smith, an attorney for the United States Department of Justice, said he made the request Friday to prevent the possible disclosure of classified information by Mr. von Bolschwing.

The Government is attempting to strip Mr. von Bolschwing of his United States citizenship and deport him. He is accused of concealing wartime Nazi affiliations when he applied for citizenship in New York in 1959.

Mr. Von Bolschwing contends that he was an undercover agent for the American Office of Strategic Services and denies ever having served in the SS or Gestapo. ...

Bolschwing "had been Eichmann's tutor on Zionism and the politics of Zionism in the mid-1930s and then his ally in persecuting the Jews of Austria."( Note 2) After the war, Bolschwing served as an asset first for the Gehlen organization, and was then recruited directly by the CIA for work in Austria . Despite his less than stellar achievements as an asset, the CIA rewarded him for his service by helping him obtain entry and citizenship in the United States. In his essay from the IWG-sponsored anthology U.S. Intelligence and the Nazis, University of Virginia Professor and IWG historian Timothy Naftali details Bolschwing's panic after discovering that Eichmann had been captured by the Israelis. Naftali notes that he went so far as to contact one of his former CIA handlers:

The retired U.S. intelligence officer, who had only a superficial knowledge of Bolschwing's actual career in the SS, could not understand his former employee's anxiety-it was inconceivable that the Israelis would try to snatch Bolschwing on U.S. soil-and so he turned to an acquaintance in the CIA's Counterintelligence Staff to learn more about him. Once Bolschwing's former case officer saw the captured German records found in the torpedo factory, he was shaken, saying that neither he nor others had known about Bolschwing's past, and asserting that 'we would not have used him at that time had we known about it.' Some of what this intelligence officer did not remember knowing had been known by others in the CIA from the moment Bolschwing was hired. ( Note 3)

He had joined the Nazi party at the age of twenty-three, in 1932, and had become an SD (party security service) informer almost immediately. In the years leading up to 1939, von Bolschwing became a leading Nazi intelligence agent in the Middle East, where he worked under cover as an importer in Jerusalem. One of his first brushes with Nazi espionage work, according to captured SS records, was a role in creating a covert agreement between the Nazis and Fieval Polkes, a commander of the militant Zionist organization Haganah, whom von Bolschwing had met through business associates in the Mideast.  across Europe, thwarted US immigration authorities from deporting or identifying Nazis living in America.

The documents provide an insight into the Cold War obsession with communism and the willingness to take at face value information provided by war criminals. The one thing that stood between them and a war crimes prosecution was their perceived usefulness.

Although the use of Nazis by the US was far more widespread than the British, one UK case revealed yesterday concerned a Gestapo official named Horst Kopkow. He was captured and interrogated by the British, and supplied information about Heinrich Himmler's movements in the final days of the war.

According to CIA records, he played up the value of his knowledge of Soviet and communist espionage. The records suggest that British intelligence faked Kopkow's death from illness, in order to use him as a spy. He died in Germany in 1996.

Another Gestapo official, Otto von Bolschwing, was hired by the CIA in late 1949.

He had worked with Eichmann before the war planning the expropriation of Jewish property in Austria and later served as the SS consultant to the forces that staged the bloody pogrom of Bucharest in 1941.

In early 1950, the Austrian police began asking questions about von Bolschwing.

His personnel file had been among those captured at the end of the war by the US.

To protect this agent from a war crimes trial, the CIA decided that any prosecutors who asked for it should be told, according to a secret CIA memo, "no files available".

In 1953, in recognition of von Bolschwing's work for US intelligence, the CIA pressured the US immigration service to let him enter the country. He later became a US citizen. In the 1970s he was exposed and stripped of his citizenship, but he was never arrested. He died in 1982.

Theodor Saevecke was hired by the CIA in Berlin as agent "Cabanjo" in the late 1940s. A senior SS officer in Milan in 1943, he had participated in the forced deportation of Jews in North Africa. In Italy he rounded up and killed members of the Italian resistance. By the early 1950s, he was an agent for the US in the West German criminal police service. When some Italian partisans sought his arrest in 1954 for his war crimes, the CIA sought to protect him.

A CIA document dated July 12, 1954, lists his offences: "Attended and managed hostage execution in Italian village; doubtless role in North Africa supervising deportation Jews to Germany." The memo then shows the CIA's intention to set Saevecke up as a private detective if the West German Government decided to drop him. He worked for West German police throughout the 1960s, retired on a full pension and died in 1988.

The hundreds of thousands of papers were released by the US National Archives.

They have been pored over recently by historians of the Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Record Interagency Working Group, and assimilated into a book: US Intelligence and the Nazis.

Another case involved Viorel Trifa, an alleged student leader in Romania's fascist Iron Guard movement. He became bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the US and once led prayers in Congress. The FBI knew of his background, according to the US government historian Norman Goda. But, Dr Goda said, the FBI director J. Edgar Hoover considered him a "very desirable part of the landscape during the Cold War.

Men like him kept emigre communities from being sympathetic to communist governments back home".

Mykola Lebed, a Ukrainian accused of aiding German stormtroopers in the suppression of wartime resistance, was also protected by the CIA. He was hired by the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps and later by the CIA. In 1953, the US immigration service wanted to investigate Lebed but called off the investigation after the CIA intervention.

Dr Goda said the documents show that US Immigration was not, as long thought, "asleep at the switch" during the years when many Nazi sympathisers entered America. They were often thwarted by the CIA, he added.

The records also shed new light on how the Nazi Government raised more than $ 20 million in foreign exchange between 1936 and 1941 with the help of US banks, particularly Chase National Bank (now JP Morgan Chase). US banks made more than $ 1.2 million in commissions.

One of his first brushes with Nazi espionage work, according to captured SS records, was a role in creating a covert agreement between the Nazis and Fieval Polkes, a commander of the militant Zionist organization Haganah, whom von Bolschwing had met through business associates in the Mideast. Under the arrangement the Haganah was permitted to run recruiting and training camps for Jewish youth inside Germany. These young people, as well as certain other Jews driven out of Germany by the Nazis, were encouraged to emigrate to Palestine. Polkes and the Haganah, in return, agreed to provide the SS with intelligence about British affairs in Palestine. Captured German records claim that Polkes believed the increasingly brutal Nazi persecution of the Jews could be turned to Zionist advantage-at least temporarily-by compelling Jewish immigration to Palestine, and that the Haganah commander's sole source of income, moreover, was secret funds from the SS. ...
