Hollande says there's unlikely to be any passengers. It's far too early to know the cause of the crash.

A passenger plane carrying 148 people between Barcelona and Dusseldorf has crashed in France.
The Airbus A320, operated by Lufthansa's Germanwings budget airline, came down in the southern French Alps.
French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said the causes of the crash were not yet known.
"We of course don't know the reasons for the crash," he told reporters.

"We obviously fear that the 142 to 150 passengers and crew died today, given the conditions of this crash."
France's interior ministry says debris from the airliner has been found near a village in the region.
A total of 142 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew, were on board the plane, according to aviation officials cited by the local La Provence newspaper.
Germanwings says it cannot confirm the reports. Airbus has yet to comment.

I saw a picture of the flight path between the flight origin Barcelona and Düsseldorf its destination. The actual crash site, Barcelonnette, looks some way off course. I'll see if I can find map of it.

This seems to show the usual flight path but the crash site is in Barcelonnette over near the Italian border above Cannes. Not really on the flight path at all.

That's within normal variation for weather etc.
The TV said a "770" mayday was issued via transponder. Not via radio. And no attempt divert to an emergency landing was made. The plane continued flying straight towards the Alps which is a serious mistake in an emergency.
Have to find out if the 770 transponder mayday was automatic. That could be a symptom of several things including an unzipping of the bulkhead due to catastrophic breach of the cabin or airframe failure on the 24 year old Airbus A320.

A Charlie Hebdo style of attack to warn France and Germany to not cozy up the Ruskies? Just sayin.

That's very weird then. That's the route you take to get to Milan from Barcelona. Was the aircraft making a stop?

Apparently there is no route or air lane where the crash took and the BBC are reporting that as "strange".

Airbus runs by computer that will take over if it senses the pilot has entered wrong input for flight.
It is possible the instrumentation malfunctioned and the computer interpreted corrupted input and corrected by flying the plane into the mountains. Either the angle of attack sensor or pitot. The pilots would be in a life struggle trying to figure out how to correct this.
Of course other options are very much still possible and there was no mayday from pilots that had 8 minutes to do what would have taken 3 seconds (Malaysia). Also we need to find out how the "770" transponder mayday was activated and its meaning.
We now have governments that have a big brother like 'computer' that has taken over and flies on its own when reporting airline crashes so good luck with any information that comes from those criminal sources.
