WarII Propaganda Film Series: Victory at Sea
#1
I used to watch this series endlessly when I was a kid. We played "war" a lot. The neighborhood kids would get our guns and split up into two teams: the japs and the marines. As agreed we would walk all the way to Highway 101 or Mendocino Ave. Once there, we would go down into the dry creek bed and start walking toward each other. The strategy was to keep walking or wait in ambush. I can still "hear" the Howler monkeys in the trees above.

My dad was served on the USS Northampton, heavy cruiser, before WWII. Just before it went out into the Pacific, he was reassigned to mine sweeper that was sent up to the Aleutian Islands. Lucky for all of us. The Northampton was sunk during the Battle of Tassafaronga as a part of the Guadalcanal campaign.

War was a huge part of my mindset my entire childhood. When I was in the Boy Scouts, it was really just a training camp for going into the military. We went to an Army base close by and shot carbines with live ammo, watched so det chord take down a telephone pole, and a flame thrower take out an fake enemy pill box. It was really cool.

It's taken a long time for me to realize that my mind was almost completely controlled in part by this series. I always loved the first minute of each episode ending with the ominous warning of the French horns.

When I say "almost completely controlled," I am referring to the counter-narrative that was also a big part of my life. We read Bible stories after dinner. The most compelling stories were about the prophets standing up to the wayward kings of Israel. Probably the most powerful one was the story of David and Bathsheba. For all the problems religions create, I have to admit that my upbringing was a prison with a hidden escape door built in. I finally went through the door. When it slammed behind me, there was no door knob to re-open the door to get back to "reality."

I was fascinated by WWII from a very young age. I remember reading (on my own, outside of school) books about Pearl Harbor and Hitler when I was in grade school. It took me too long - decades - to start reading revisionist historians and begin to question if everything about "the good war" was true or not.

Very similar childhood with guns and war playing having been such a central part - I guess because I was born just after WWII. Strange then how all three of us, and doubtless many others too, broke out of that war-play and cold war propaganda model.

I liked your analogy Lauren, of the door without a knob to get back to "reality".

The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.

As Justin Raimondo pointed out in that article I posted yesterday, we are constantly hammered over the head with Hitler, Munich, the Holocaust, Pearl Harbor, etc. whenever any foreign policy issue comes up. When these hot buttons get pushed, most Americans just react, even though they don't understand what these events were about. Like this idiot -
