Ghost by Jefferson Morley [on J.J. Angleton CIA-CI Chief]
#1
Just finished the book. It does contain a few new interesting points and documents well who Angleton's friends and work colleagues were at various points. A few interesting tid-bits on lesser known things that Angleton was in charge of, but that this has long been hidden [such as the 'Huston Plan'], his political bent [far-right anti-communist, anti-socialist, anti-democratic-socialist, anti-left-liberal], his working with Hoover on many things, his early life. However, it was a TERRIBLE DISAPPOINTMENT on the most important things. While it did make the point that Angleton and his team knew all there was to know on Oswald from his 'defection' until his death [and even after], this was kept from the public, the press, the various commissions and investigations and even from some others in CIA. That said the book takes the horrible position that Oswald was [for some unknown reason] the assassin [perhaps with some pals of his] and that the death of Mary Meyer was in no way connected to JFK's assassination nor suspicious. It also shows how Angleton was very close to Israeli intelligence and looked the other way as Israel built their nuclear program and 'procured' the enriched Uranium by stealing it from USG sources - and Angleton was the CIA's liaison with Israel! So, despite some interesting bits here and there IMO a very flawed and disappointing book. I don't know if Morley is just naive or is doing a cover-up for some important issues. He missed some others than those mentioned above too, such as the USS Liberty attack [why], although he does correctly posit that Angleton directed the ship to be there and no one else. I could go on, but will leave it here for now.

Morley's OUR MAN IN MEXICO also briefly wrings its hands as to whether there was a conspiracy and whether Oswald did the shooting. I'm not sure I want to follow that line of thought into Morley's motivations too deeply. It's depressing. There was another Angleton bio released just a handful of years back, within the past decade. It looked decent.

The info of Angleton being linked to the Huston Plan is important though. It links a couple of extra dots, some of which feel pertinent when examining Gladio, Bill Harvey, Israel, the neocons, 9/11 and related subjects.

Morley clearly says the Warren Commission was compromised by CIA and others [then lists lots of people including Angleton high on the list and 'desiring to wait the Commission out']. Yet, he states in a sentence I had to read five times to believe it, LHO was the assassin - and if one looks back a few pages Morley implies that LHO not only fired the magic bullet, but also fired from behind the fence on the grassy knoll....what a guy that LHO was!!!!! He wasn't just a patsy, he was a SUPERPATSY! [thanks to Angleton and a few others]. Morley is not a good logician with his own material. He either has blinders on, just can't 'go there', or is doing a modified limited hangout of first order.

The moment Angleton heard about the Assassination he knew all about Oswald - more than any other person in the USA or Planet perhaps - and he never told anyone that he knew or what he knew and how he had watched and used Oswald all along. Angleton kept his secrets well.

Yes, the Huston Plan was Angleton's baby, but he didn't want his name associated with it. Angleton championed Nixon.
The stonewalling of the Commission, infiltrating Garrison's investigation and HSCA were also Angleton and his pals.
Allowing Israel to break US law to get their nuclear program was Angleton, as was having the USS LIberty where it was on that fateful day.
Some of Angleton's best friends later turn up in Gladio operations and other mayhem like that.
Cord Meyers was a very close friend and they played chess and had dinners together often.
Operation CHAOS was Angleton's baby.
Removing all the papers from Win Scott and Mary Meyers homes was Angleton's doing - much never to be seen again.
A long list of people who had information Angleton didn't like them having died suddenly after and strangely. Morely is sure they were all coincidences.
Dulles was a close friend, and Harvey was a close associate - as were a lot of other names on the suspicious JFK assassination list...in fact all that were CIA and many that were FBI such as Win Scott, Phillips, you name them,....he knew and worked close with them..he knew what they knew...they often didn't know what he knew.
He was a VERY important figure in the CIA and in our covert history from before Dallas, through Dallas, and until his death and beyond.
He was and is more important that Morley makes him out to be and Morley makes him out to be very important.

Morely is very confused and conflicted on some points, but he has new and clear documentation that others who can see the whole picture more clearly can use. The who knew who when information and who passed what information to whom when information is well done - but then the analysis and conclusions that should follow are often flawed.
The book has value for a researcher who can see what is new and true and what is not true...but I'd not suggest it to those not really soaked in these issues - as Morely clearly gets some major things wrong....but adds some new fuel against Angleton vis-a-vis the cover-up on the JFK assassination and what was known about Oswald all along [among other things]. Mixed bag......

Peter, yeah, the book you linked on Amazon is the other biography I'm referring to. In an excerpt from that volume that I read on Google Books, the author made it clear that he does not rule out Angleton's involvement in the murder of JFK, and does not rule out a conspiracy. I also didn't stumble across any 'Oswald did it' pages. That's smarter than usual and better than propping up the lies about Oswald, which Morley sadly seems to have now done at least twice.

Lobster magazine even gave that book a good, if short, positive review. The definitive book on Angleton has yet to be written IMO. I think it is clear that Angleton played a primary role in the CIA's cover-up of the JFK Assassination, and very likely Angleton played some role in the selection of Oswald as the patsy - although that proof is still lacking, the trail of crumbs leads to Angleton's door. During CHOAS [which lasted MUCH longer than officially acknowledged by CIA] and LINGUAL, Angleton was reading tens of thousands of letters per year of suspect [to him] people, who's communications were illegally copied and arrived at this desk. These included some Presidents, Congressmen, and others all over the World. He always had enough blackmail information to control others, just as Hoover did. Interestingly, during CHAOS when the CIA was syping on the Black Panters [and similar groups] and the anti-war and similar groups, Angleton admited internally he could not find any direction or funding from the USSR [as was the Right's party line]. Angleton also played a big hand in MKULTRA. Angleton also empowered GLADIO and other nasty covert operations. A lot of his friends were out and out fascists - no surprise there. He was central in forming the bond between Israeli and US intelligence. A tall man that was a moral midget. His one saving grace was that he sometimes took some days off to go fishing in the rain - and he grew orchids in his greenhouse. He spied on the spies but often got things wrong by any measure. Being fooled by Philby, who he was very close to, haunted him to his grave and fed his paranoia, which knew no bounds. And, he did wait out all the investigations on JFK. The US is a much worse place for his existence and 'work' at CIA.

James Angleton set the strategy [for the CIA to lie and stonewall all JFK assassination inquiries] in 1964. "Jim would prefer to wait out the Commission," as one CIA memo about Warren Commission inquiries put it.[1]

Morley responds to CIA historian David Robarge

November 6, 2017 jeff morley
In a great compliment to me, personally and professionally, CIA historian David Robarge has attacked my new biography of James Angleton, THE GHOST.

Click to OrderRobarge's review is a compliment because it shows how my account of Angleton's career is disturbing the CIA's preferred narrative of Angleton, and especially the agency's enduring cover story that Angleton was not paying close attention to Lee Harvey Oswald in the summer of 1963. In fact, he was paying attention to Oswald, as I show in THE GHOST.

Robarge is discomfited by the JFK facts as I have presented them. He should be.

Unrequited Animus

Robarge's review does not up live up to the usual editorial standards of the CIA, which is why I suspect it was not published by Robarge's employer but by Max Holland on his personal site Washington Decoded.

Let it be said that while Holland and Robarge harbor an animus against me, I do not return the favor. Robarge's published views on Angleton are fair and judicious. Holland did pioneering work on the story of Deep Throat/Mark Felt. When it comes to THE GHOST, however, their professionalism falters.

This does not surprise me. When I started researching THE GHOST, I sought out Robarge's expertise. In the summer of 2015, I requested an interview with him. On August 21, 2015, CIA Public Affairs Office informed me that the agency could not support the request.

Robarge now criticizes me for not sharing his views of Angleton, after passing up the opportunity to share his views with me.

Robarge says THE GHOST is "erratically organized."

Readers will observe that the 50-plus chapters in THE GHOST are organized chronologically.

John Hadden, CIA
John Hadden, retired Tel Aviv station chief and colleague of James Angleton.
Robarge says that I have "insufficient discernment among sources."

In THE GHOST I relied heavily on on-the-record interviews with retired CIA officers, and others who knew and worked with Angleton including Bill Hood, Jane Roman, Peter Jessup, Ann Goodpasture, Bill Gowen, Peter Sichel, as well as State Department officials, Tom Hughes and Tom Pickering, and former Mossad chief Efraim Halevy.

I drew from on the private papers and records of retired CIA officers including Richard Helms, Roscoe Hillenkoetter, James McCarger, and John Hadden.

I also relied on CIA's biographies of Richard Helms, John McCone and William Colby. David Robarge is quoted favorably on pp. 86 and 123.

Robarge taxes me for quoting an anonymous blogger.

I quoted one blogger who described Angleton's reign at the CIA as a "Panopticon rendered in paper." I thought that was a nice turn of phrase. Robarge says the blogger did not have any citations. I had the same problem with this blogger, which is why I do not cite him as the source for a single fact in the book, only his quote.

Robarge says "Morley overstates Angleton's part in the Italian election operationhe hardly was its miracle worker.'"

My account of Angleton's role in the 1948 election is based in part on Cloak & Gown: Scholars in the Secret War, 1939-1961, by Robin Winks, p. 351-388. "It was in Italy that the legendary Jim Angleton' was born," Winks wrote. Angleton may not have been a "miracle worker" in Italy but he had that reputation, at least according to his friend Winks.

George Hunter White
In a 1953 diary entry, Angleton's friend George Hunter White notes "CIA reimbursement," and calls with MKULTRA scientist Sidney Gottlieb
Robarge says "no persuasive evidence shows that Angleton had a "supporting role" in the MK/ULTRA project."

My account is based primarily on the diary of Angleton's friend, George Hunter White, which is held in the Stanford University Library. The diary records six meetings between Angleton and White in the summer and fall of 1952, including phone calls, meals, and office meetings.

The diary shows the two men met in 1952 with Sidney Gottlieb, the Technical Services Division scientist who later ran MKULTRA. White would go on to run two CIA safehouses where unwitting persons were dosed with LSD.

White's diary is persuasive evidence of Angleton's supporting role in the early days of MKULTRA.

An Israeli diplomat is alleged to have been "Angleton's man in Havana." But they met only a few times,

Baruch Nir was Angleton's man in Havana. Late in life, he spoke in detail to Israeli journalists about how he helped Angleton with intelligence missions in Cuba. He was described as the CIA's man in Havana.

Robarge disagrees that the United States had "two divergent Cuba policies" in mid-1963 represented by the Joint Chiefs of Staff's "engineered provocation" plan called NORTHWOODS and the White House's "autonomous operations" using Cuban exiles, possibly in conjunction with the assassination of Castro.

Reasonable people can differ. But Robarge adds "NORTHWOODS was never carried out, and the CIA's integrated covert action program codenamed AM/WORLD became the focus for the rest of Kennedy's presidency. "

How do we know NORTHWOODS "was never carried out"?

I cited the proceedings of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on May 1, 1963. The JCS unanimously approved of NORTHWOODS approach for provoking war with Cuba. And that is where the declassified paper trail ends. There is nothing in the public record that states whether NORTHWOODS was executed or discontinued. If Robarge has evidence that NORTHWOODS was cancelled after May 1963, I hope he will share it.

Oswald ID cardRobarge says that Morley "asserts that Angleton stressed Lee Harvey Oswald's Cuban ties so the White House would activate NORTHWOODS."

I don't know what passage in THE GHOST Robarge is referring to. All I can say is that I did not write, and I do not believe, this claim as stated.

Angleton did not stress Oswald's Cuban ties after JFK's assassination. The CIA's psychological warfare agents in Miami and New Orleans publicly stressed Oswald's Cuba ties. Angleton himself did not.

I did not write, and I do not believe, that the White House "activated" NORTHWOODS. Robarge is drawing conspiratorial conclusions from the evidence. I do not draw this conclusion in THE GHOST.

Robarge accuses me of a "fundamental misunderstanding" of Angleton's "Cuban Control and Action Capabilities" an assessment of the Castro regime's counterintelligence apparatus, issued in May 1963. In THE GHOST I report that the memo was not sent to the White House, the National Security Council, and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, the administration's point man on Cuban affairs.

Click to Order

"The recipients on the paper's distribution list were the USIB's [United States Intelligence Board] members and other US departments with equities in Cuban affairs," he writes, all of which is true. Then he writes. "The White House, the NSC, and the attorney general would not have received it as a standard practice."

But, of course, JFK's Cuba policy in 1963 did not follow "standard practice." Attorney Robert Kennedy, as the administration's point man on Cuba, did have equities in Cuba policy. So did the NSC. But they didn't get the memo.

"Angleton did not leave them off as some devious tactic to influence policy behind the scenes or in a show of antagonism toward them," Robarge writes.

No, Angleton left them off because he, like Dick Helms, disdained the amateurish AMWORLD approach favored by RFK and the White House. Angleton's May 1963 memo shows that he trying to do something more serious: forge an inter-agency consensus around a more robust policy aimed at what we now call "regime change."

Robarge accuses me of a "gross misrepresentation" when I describe the assassination of JFK as, "an epic counterintelligence failure culminated on Angleton's watch."

We can agree that counterintelligence chief Angleton was responsible for detecting threats from U.S. enemies seeking to penetrate the government's intelligence agency and American institutions.

Robarge does not dispute that Angleton, and his aides Jane Roman and Betty Egerter, received multiple reports about the movements, politics and foreign contacts of Lee Harvey Oswald from November 1959 to Nove

Betty Egerter
Betty Egerter, aide to James Angleton, who controlled access to the CIA's Oswald file from 1959 to 1963.
mber 1963.

Robarge does not dispute that in late 1963, Angleton's staff was informed about Oswald's contacts with KGB and DGI officers, one of whom had been identified as a possible KGB assassination specialist.

Robarge does not dispute that Angleton and his staff also knew about Oswald's pro-Castro politics and his recent arrest in October 1963.

We agree that Angleton's people did not take any action to heighten scrutiny of Oswald.

That's why I describe their actions as a "failure," and I think the consequences were "epic."

"By Morley's logic, Angleton and the Counterintelligence Staff supposedly were, or should have been, preoccupied with one personOswaldto the exclusion of everyone else caught up in the sweep."

I never say that Angleton should have been preoccupied with Oswald.

What I document in THE GHOST is that Angleton was interested in Lee Harvey Oswald from 1959 to 1963 and that he used Oswald for intelligence purposesin his hunt for the mole and in watching the Cuban Consulate in Mexico City.

Our Man in Mexico
Click on image to order OUR MAN IN MEXICO
Robarge says "Morley unskeptically draws on CIA station chief Winston Scott's memoir for details about what the Agency knew of Oswald's doings in Mexico City without noting the errors in it that were pointed out in a publicly available CIA critique."

I saw the CIA critique of Scott's memoir when I wrote Scott's biograpy, Our Man In Mexico. The author, who did not know Scott well, wrote six or seven years after Scott's death. He claimed that Scott had "gone to seed" by the time he wrote the memoir in 1969-1970.

In fact, in those years Scott received the CIA's Distinguished Intelligence Medal and ran an international consulting business with former London station chief Al Ulmer. He had not "gone to seed," according to his colleagues, friends and family. I did not cite the memo because it is not factual.

Robarge says my reporting reaches "a low point" when I quote Tom Hughes, the head of the State Department's Intelligence and Research division in the 1960s.

As a senior State Department official, Tom Hughes is a credible source. As I noted in the text, Hughes "speculated" about Angleton's role in the events of June 1967.

Robarge says Morley "does not appear to have actually read Agency counterintelligence officer Tennent H. Bagley's report arguing for Nosenko's mala fides although portions of it have long been declassified."

Robarge does not appear to have read my book. On p. 168 of THE GHOST I cite this document, summarize its contents, and note Bagley's authorship.

I weighed Bagley' memo for Nosenko's mala fides against the case made by CIA officers John Hart, George Kisevalter, Cleveland Cram, and Benjamin Fischer. I concluded the latter had the much stronger case.

Robarge says MI-5 scientist Peter Wright is "routinely derided by critics as semi-paranoid."

Robarge cites no names of these critics and disputes none of Wright's facts, so it is hard to know what he is talking about.

I find Wright's Spycatcher to a credible source because Wright collaborated professionally with Angleton for a decade. He shared his anti-communist politics, subscribed to his penetration theories, and admired him personally, at least up until 1970. I relied on Wright precisely because he did not have an ideological animus against Angleton.

"According to Angleton's former colleague John Hadden, Angleton was guilty of either treason or incompetence' in his handling of a suspected Israeli theft of nuclear material from a US facility. No alternatives exist?"

Sure, there are alternative explanations of Angleton's behavior. My point is that his colleague and deputy John Hadden did not think so.

I'm accused of "bad sourcing" because I "overuse" books by Joseph Trento, Michael Holzman and Tim Wiener.

In THE GHOST's 824 footnotes, these three authors are cited a total of nine times. The articles and books of David Robarge are cited eleven times.

"Angleton cooperated' in quelling the outcry against Israel after it attacked the [Liberty] ship, but Morley does not say how or offer any proof that he did."

I write on p. 183 that Angleton cooperated by endorsing the Israeli claim, later withdrawn, that the attackers mistook the Liberty for an Egyptian steamer. Angleton made this claim in the first CIA cable about the attack. My proof is the memo reproduced in Foreign Relations of the United States, 1964-1968, Volume XIX, Arab-Israeli Crisis and War 1967, Document 284.

Robarge says Morley's "information about Angleton and the MK/ULTRA program comes mostly from H. P. Albarelli's A Terrible Mistake."

Actually, my account mostly comes from George White's diary and the declassified MKULTRA papers at the National Security Archive at George Washington University, which corroborate Albarelli on key points.

Efraim Halevy
Efraim Halvey, future chief of Mossad, with James Angleton. Halevy was a key source for THE GHOST.
An account of Angleton's relationship with an Israeli intelligence (Shin Bet) officer is taken from an imagined after-death conversation between the two men.

False. My account of Angleton's friendship with Amos Manor comes from my interview with Efraim Halevy, former chief of Mossad, who was close to both men for decades. It also comes from Israeli journalists Yossi Mellman and Dan Regev who interviewed Manor extensively. Reuel Marc Gerect, the man who wrote the imaginary after-death conversation, knew Manor personally. I cited only his assessment of Manor's abilities. The friendship of Angleton and Manor is not disputed by anybody in the Israeli security services.

Norif you read this tricky attack carefullyis it disputed by Robarge himself.

"Morley ignores reliable sources whenever they contradict his speculations, such as Samuel Halpern's and Hayden Peake's article on who ordered Nosenko's detention (Angleton did not)."

I read Halpern and Peake's article, and found it supported my conclusion. It was division chief David Murphy who ordered the detention, but he was urged on by Angleton. If Angleton had objected, Murphy, by far the junior official, would have relented. On p. 161, I quote Pete Bagley who said, accurately, "Angleton never opposed incarceration."

Valerio Borghese
Fascist commander Valerio Borghese. THE GHOST recounts the story that Angleton told an Italian newspaper: how he rescued Borghese from partisan justice at the end of WW II. (Photo credit: Getty)
"Alleged connections between Angleton and World War II war criminals, for example, come mainly from an interview conducted 70 years after the events with an Army intelligence officer who was barely 20 years old at the time."

False. My account of Angleton's dealings with Italian fascist Valerio Borghese comes entirely from an interview that Angleton gave to the Italian newspaper EPOCA in 1976 and from declassified CIA records on PLAN IVY available in the agency's electronic reading room.

My account of Angleton's dealings with Nazi Eugen Dollmann is mainly based on the CIA's voluminous declassified file on Dollman where Angleton ("Major O'Brien") is frequently mentioned. The story that Army officer Bill Gowan told me was amply corroborated by the Dollman file.

"References to unsourced blog postings, some of a conspiracist nature, abound, and other citations are bizarre."

They do not "abound." Robarge does not identify any "conspiracist" web sites that I supposedly cited because there are none.

Then Robarge goes on to list my alleged errors, some of which do not appear in the published version of the book.

OSS Director William Donovan was not known for "aerial heroics" in World War I; he led an infantry unit.
I stand corrected
Bletchley Park was not an OSS training school.
Bletchley Park was a British intelligence installation where all OSS officers were trained. I guess Robarge's point is that the OSS didn't formally designate the place a training school. I called it an OSS training school because all OSS officers were trained there.
According to Morley, Angleton arrived in London in March 1944 amid destruction from the German's V weapons. But the V-1 and V-2 surface-to-surface rockets were not used until June and September, respectively.
The missile attack that I dated to March 1944 happened later that year.
DCI Roscoe Hillenkoetter was not "brought on" to CIA when it was created; he already was there as head of the Agency's predecessor agency.
Robarge's strain is showing. He is restating what I wrote; The CIA was created in 1947 and Hillenkoeter was brought on to run it.
DCI Walter Bedell Smith, not Allen Dulles, merged the Agency's early espionage component, the Office of Special Operations (OSO), with the Agency's covert action element, the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC), to create the Directorate of Plans.
Bedell Smith ordered the OSO/OPC merger; Dulles implemented it. My source is CIA historian Anne Karalekas.
Angleton had no authority to allow NSA spy Sidney Joseph Petersen, Jr. "to plead guilty and avoid a public trial," nor does Morley's source (an article by historian Cees Wiebes) suggest that.
Wiebes says that Angleton's finding that Petersen was not guilty of espionage allowed him to plea to lesser charges, which is what I wrote.
The Soviet spy ring called the Rote Kappelleo operated during World War II, not in the 1920s; Morley confuses it with the Trust deception operation.
Point well taken
The star-shaped batteries seen in aerial photographs of Cuba in August 1962 were for launching SAMs, not MRBMs.
Contrary to Robarge's false claim, this mistake does not appear in THE GHOST. I suspect Robarge is quoting from the galley copy of the book. If so, he failed to extend the professional courtesy of checking against the published version. This failure of professionalism may be symptomatic of bias.
The reporting of GRU Colonel Oleg Penkovsky was not called the "Penkovsky Papers"; his documentary material was codenamed IRONBARK, and reports of his debriefings were labeled CHICKADEE.
More pedantry. Robarge knows full well that the published version of Penkovsky's reporting was called the "Penkovsky Papers."
Public Law 110, which allows the CIA to admit up to 100 persons into the United States each year for national security reasons, is not "a secret arrangement"it is part of the CIA Act of 1949 (specifically, section 7 of 50 US Code section 403h) that established the Agency's special administrative authorities.
It was secret to 99.9 percent of Americans.
MH/CHAOS did notcould not"spy on and infiltrate the entire antiwar movement."
According to Frank Rafalko's account, MH-CHAOS indexed the name of 300,000 Americans, and opened files on 7,000 people individuals and 100 antiwar organizations. If Robarge can identify a segment of the antiwar movement Angleton did not spy on, he should share his insights.
Nosenko was not given LSD during his detention. Administering it and truth serum was discussed, but DCI Helms refused to authorize using either.
CIA psychologist John Gittinger told PBS Frontline that the agency "decided to try some kind of drugs." Nosenko said that he was dosed with LSD.
"Former KGB officer Igor Orlov was not "blameless" of spying against the United States. He was a penetration of the CIA in the 1950s but was inactive when the FBI surveilled him as part of Angleton's molehunt in the 1960s. The fact that he was never caught doing anything operational is irrelevant to his earlier espionage."
Again Robarge unprofessionally cites an alleged mistake ("blameless") that doesn't appear in the book.
KGB officer Yuri Loginov was not executed by a firing squad after Angleton arranged for his turnover to the Sovlets (see Tom Mangold's interview with Oleg Gordievsky in Cold Warrior).
I wrote that it was "rumored" that Loginov was executed, which is true. It is also true that Loginov was not executed.
Robarge objects to my descriptions of Angleton, saying they are "sensationalistic.' He does not dispute their accuracy.

"Angleton had become a lethal man."
I said this because a 1944 OSS memo credited him with developing the intelligence that resulted in the "liquidation" of 16 German spies in Italy.
" . . . Angleton and [American labor official Jay] Lovestone effectively controlled what American labor unions had to say about US foreign policy."
This is the conclusion of Ted Morgan, Lovestone's capable and sympathetic biographer.
"Then his power became unparalleled."
Dulles thought Angleton's obtaining of the secret speech was one of the CIA's greatest coups and gave Angleton unparalleled freedom of action in the years that followed.
"By the mid-1960s, Angleton reigned as the Machiavelli of the new American national security state, a thinker and strategist of ruthless clarity."
My source for this was CIA officer George Kisevalter, It was he who likened Angleton to Machiavelli. In 1997 Kisevalter was honored as one the top 50 CIA officers in the agency's first 50 years. Does Robarge think he is not a credible source?
"Angleton was a man unbound. His empire now stretched from Mexico City to London to Rome to Jerusalem."
This is a factual description of the range of Angleton's contacts. In Mexico City, he had Win Scott and Ann Goodpasture. In London, he had Maurice Oldfield, Peter Wright and Arthur Marti. In Rome, he had Valerio Borghese and security chief Vito Miceli; in Jerusalem he had the Mossad's Meir Amit, and Isser Harel, Shabak's Amos Manor, as well as retired prime minister David Ben-Gurion.
"Angleton was a ghoul, a specter who showed up around the time of death."
Win Scott's widow Janet Scott thought Angleton was a ghoul when he showed up to seize her husband's personal papers less than two days after Win Scott died.
"Morley's use of the JFK Assassination Records Collection at the National Archives, along with his interviews with Angleton's family and associates, add a small measure of insight."
I take this grudging statement to mean that Robarge does not dare dispute one of the most important findings in THE GHOST: that Angleton monitored Lee Harvey Oswald from 1959 to 1963, used him for intelligence purposes in the mole hunt and Mexico City, and then, after Oswald allegedly killed Kennedy, covered up what he knew about him, committing perjury and obstruction of justice.

As you can read from my translation of Metta's article, we now know that Angleton was the recruiter of Licio Gelli, the head of P2

Clay Shaw's Centro Mondiale Commerciale and its Israeli connections

Article by Michele Metta

Warning: this article of mine will be, for me, the most difficult. It will also be the most important. It is, first of all, my tribute to the birth centenary of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and to the anniversary of his assassination. It will sometimes contain personal accents. This in no way means that it will lack of objectivity. Quite the contrary. Please, as never before, read it to the end. Well, let's go.
I never ever doubted that one day I would also narrate what I'm about to say. I was only looking for the right mean, and I think I found it: it's L'Antidiplomatico and in its director - my director - Alessandro Bianchi, that you have to know it - never censures a dot or a comma of what I write.
Because of the content of the previous chapters of my CMC investigation, I can easily imagine some of my readers becoming surprised, if not even dazed, at reading the title. In all of those previous chapters, in fact, I did each time show the presence, in Centro Mondiale Commerciale, of individuals with a clearest fascist connotation. Talking of Israel all of a sudden, might seem a contradiction. I answer that - and I stress unfortunately - it is not. And, before going to the enormous revelation on CMC I am about to give you, I will explain why it's not a contradiction thanks to a very concrete example.
It is an example taken from another issue that I know very well: the History of Chile, a country that in this case, it is not a stock phrase - everyone should visit at least once in their life. When Pinochet came to power there through a coup d'état supported by the US, a girl was kidnapped by the DINA, the regime's torture organization. She was only 23, her name was Diana Frida Arón Svigilsky, and she was born from a Jewish family. She was amazing beautiful. In describing her, the language of poetry rises to your mouth: the face sprinkled by the spring of a conference of freckles; the hair crossed by obsidian; the height soaring like the rush of a hymn; the gait with something of the aerial proceeding of dreams. And just like her father Elias, Diana was a journalist. A journalist on Allende's side. That means, on the side of the legitimate President of Chile that Pinochet killed. Since Diana, because of her sensitivity so special that, among her friends, had given her the joking definition of Aliviol, the most famous Chilean brand of painkillers, immediately understood what her duty was: despite her profound economic prosperity, she instantly supported that socialist whose government priority was that the poor could stop being poor.
This's why the DINA, on November 18, 1974, set up an ambush in which, in order to capture her, they even shot her. An ambush after which they led her forcibly to Villa Grimaldi, the main dictatorship detention center. A place where Diana, as witnesses later told, suffered the tortures of Miguel Krassnoff Martechenko, notorious tormentor. Tortures imparted regardless of the fact that Diana, just for the wounds received at the time of the seizure, was already copiously bleeding. Tortures imparted please, pay attention - while mocking the religion of Diana; shouting at her a chilling infamous: "Not only a Jew, son of a bitch! No! You are even a communist!". Tortures given in spite of Diana's third month and a half pregnancy. Tortures imparted until her heart ceased to work.
And all this, while Diana's parents, begging for the pity of a release, had sent their own rabbi, with the idea, thus, of being able to indirectly obtain compassion from the Hebrew Kissinger, the US Secretary of State and hidden mind of the coup. But the conversation between the rabbi and Manuel Contreras, the head of the DINA, produced only the extreme insult of the latter, who, despite knowing, of course, the true fate of Diana, denying, lying, had exclaimed: "Oh, please, please, come on! These girls! These girls! They go around, looking for adventures, and we have even to listen to you pointing at us your finger!".
They did not understand, those parents, that those like Kissinger, whose power is out of any democratic definition, got that so incredible power because they simply do not consider their own ethnicity at all. Because if he had considered it, Kissinger would never have been the right-hand man of Nixon, a deeply anti-Semitic. If he had considered it, he would not have been maneuvering conspiracies from the White House. He would, vice versa, have been, for example, member of one of the many Jewish Associations that, in the World, demand justice and equity for the Palestinians. If he had considered it, he would have realized that to support someone like Pinochet, a madman surrounding himself with real Nazis like the Italian Stefano Delle Chiaie, is tantamount to twice killing the millions of Jews who were victims of Hitler's gas chambers.
In other words, Diana's parents did not understand that someone like Kissinger is incapable to find inside himself and the others that empathic denominator of commonsense so wonderfully synthesized by JFK during his well-known June 1963 speech where the 35[SUP]th[/SUP] President explained the absolute need to reach peace in the world by saying: "For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."
Clarified, necessarily, the above, here it is the revelation: inside CMC, from 1967 to 1970, sat Gershon Peres. Huge revelation, as I anticipated, because we are talking about the brother of Shimon Peres, the President, from 2007 to 2014, of the State of Israel. During Shimon Peres' presidency, a white phosphorus attack against the Palestinians was perpetrated, killing hundreds of children.
But, on closer inspection, the CMC is actually impregnated everywhere with the presence of Israeli power. For example, its member Roberto Ascarelli was a prominent representative of the Roman Jewish community. Yet, just as seen in Kissinger, this status did not stop him, as he should have instead stopped, from being a fundamental pivot of the rise of Licio Gelli inside P2. To say it with Sergio Flamigni, someone who has dedicated his life to the study of this fascist lodge, it is thanks to Ascarelli that «Gelli's past as a fascist and a member of the Repubblica Sociale Italiana that have blocked his affiliation until that moment, becomes now rather an element of guarantee for the anticommunist function that he will be called to do». It is thanks to Ascarelli that some CMC Board of Directors meeting will be celebrated at his lawyer's office in Piazza di Spagna 72/A, a place where, at the same time, P2 runs its first fundamental steps. Piazza di Spagna 72/A besides home of another secret lodge, Hod, and headed by the very same Ascarelli. Hod Lodge described, by witnesses listened by the Italian Parliamentarian Commission on P2, as an antechamber, if not a real twin branch of P2. And in fact, before landing in P2, Gelli had been an Hod member. And again, just like Kissinger, his being Jewish had certainly not inducted Ascarelli to find absurd to add his name to that of Gutierez Spadafora: a fascist whose son was married with a daughter of Hjalmar Schacht, one of Hitler's strongest collaborators. Or to add his name to that of Giuseppe Pièche, one of Mussolini's strongest collaborators.
Also keep in mind that connected to Israel is the CMC member Dov Biegun, who worked for the British Intelligence during WWII. Biegun is the national secretary of the National Committee for Labor Israel. It's an institution whose goal is to solder bonds between Israel and the US. It was fundamental in creating and strengthening the State of Israel, through, for example, the purchase of Israeli bonds. A notable role within it, has been taken by conservative Unions radically oriented towards the expansion of the war in Vietnam: that means the opposite of what Kennedy was preparing to do if he had not been killed. JFK, in fact, had already arranged for the withdrawal of US troops from the Asian country. Not to mention the fact that Philip Agee, a former CIA agent, accused the NCLI of connivance with the Central Intelligence Agency. An accusation that fits very well with today's NCLI relationship with Syndicates referred to as fomenters of the attempted fascist coups d'état in Venezuela. Biegun, moreover, was part of the Jewish National Fund. JNF that, through dirty tricks, subtracts land owned by Palestinian citizens transferring them into Israeli hands.
Please, consider that there were two other excellent reasons for which Israeli leaders saw Kennedy as smoke in the eyes. The first was the opposition of this US President to the Israeli nuclear arsenal. The second was that, moreover, JFK was in favor of a fair policy towards the Arabs, as demonstrated by its support towards Mattei's oil policies and towards the end of colonialism. Something which necessarily leads us to the CMC member Alfredo Crocco. Crocco, in fact, had a brother, Luigi, recruited by William Donovan, the head of the OSS, the CIA's forerunner. Luigi Crocco was a very long-standing friend and collaborator of the Jewish scientist Theodore von Kármán. The latter was the president of the AGARD, a special NATO structure whose aim was the direct coordination between scientists with the highest contributions to the Western war machine. AGARD Italian representative was Giuseppe Gabrielli, who is none other than the brother-in-law of Alfredo and Luigi Crocco. Theodore von Kármán also among the fathers of RAND Corporation: a fanatically anti-Communist think-tank, in osmosis with the Pentagon, and responsible for the most senseless US escalation during the Cold War. But above all, Theodore von Kármán president of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, which is the root of Israeli nuclear ballistic development.
But deeply tied to Israeli power is, nevertheless, Louis Bloomfield, the founder of Permindex, the company from which the Italian CMC was born. Bloomfield decided, shortly before his death, to leave his papers to the Archives of Canada. It was where the researcher Maurice Phillips was able to find a document, dated April 1, 1959. It is a letter from Bloomfield to Abraham Friedman, a member of Israel Continental Oil. Letter in which Bloomfield refers to the desire to meet the famous Jewish banker Edmund Rothschild to discuss details about a CMC operation named Capocotta. An operation that was actually a mask devised by the CMC to buy off the holders of the Italian power. And, in fact, involved in Capocotta we find a right-wing General, Giovanni De Lorenzo, and an admiral, Giuseppe Pighini, who was at the top of the Mussolini's Navy under fascism, and then at the top of NATO ComNavSouth, the Headquarter of NATO Naval Forces in Southern Europe. Another Italian Commission of Inquiry - that on Michele Sindona, a member of P2 and Mafia shows us the secret face of Pighini: according to the testimony of Carlo Bordoni, a long and very close friend of Sindona, Pighini, during the Seventies, received millions of dollars from Sindona in order to establish in Italy a far-right military dictatorship.
As I demonstrated in the immediately preceding my two articles for this magazine, it is the very same Sindona deeply connected to CMC. Sindona on which writes Peter Tompkins in his Strategy of Tension, a book that is a sort of concentrate of Tompkins' knowledges about the US abuses of power. Tompkins knows this kind of subject very well, since he had taken part in the activities of the OSS in Italy, so he really deserves a very special attention when he recalls that we can find the origins of Sindona's fortunes in what happened during the Landing in Sicily, in 1943, of the Allied Forces. Landing behind which there is a shamefull agreement with the Mafia. Pact Sindona was involved in, and in which a strong role had the equally member of the OSS Max Corvo. Circumstances - is always Tompkins to point it out - by Corvo admitted in an interview in the eighties to the Italian magazine Il Mondo. Admission as clear as to induce Il Mondo to comment with this very eloquent phrase: "Thanks to the connection between Sicilian mafia, the Italo-American, and the American secret services that had been created 35 years earlier, at the time of the Allied landing in Sicily, the former financier [Sindona] had made alliances that explained the rise of a young man without a penny, to the top of world finance." It means that Sindona had become an OSS trustee. And head of the Italian section of the OSS was James Angleton. News to be joined to that kindly given to me, through his assistant Giulia Corradi, by the already mentioned Sergio Flamigni: once again during the Italian Liberation Campaign, Angleton recruited Licio Gelli.
News thanks which ceases to appear peregrine what discovered by the Italian historian Giuseppe Casarrubea: commingles, just in the shadow of Angleton, between fascism, mafia, and future citizens of Israel, in creating the Israeli army.
And how can we avoid at this point to remember the singular proposals of support Israel made to the Italian terrorist group Brigate Rosse? According to the testimony of Luigi Carli, former magistrate of Genoa, during the session of Italian Inquiry Commission on Moro given on June 19, 2017, those proposal would have resulted in concrete financial aid from the Mossad, the Israeli Intelligence. And for this same reason we cannot avoid to remember the words of Giovanni Galloni, a brave and honest man, former vice-president of the Italian Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura, when, in 2007 as referred by the journalist Saverio Occhiuto - he said:

Then there is my sentence, something that I have always said without ever getting attention, on some confidences that Moro gave me a few months before being captured. He told me that he was worried because he believed that the US and the Israeli espionage had infiltrators in the Br [Brigate Rosse]

Or how can we avoid to remember the infiltration into Brigate Rosse certainly made by the P2 member Edgardo Sogno through those who, very subtly, he baptized Committees of Democratic Resistance. Committees the CMC member Corrado Bonfantini was part of. Bonfantini that, what a coincidence, was a very strong trustee of Sindona.
A series of facts that must necessarily be extended to the exam of the detention and murder of Aldo Moro. Sure, because Giacomo Lauro, who is one of the most reliable former members of a branch of the Italian mafia named 'ndrangheta, during his dense testimony given on January 22, 2010, during the trial for the fascist massacre, connected to the Strategy of Tension, made in Piazza della Loggia, specified that he had managed to become very close to one of the most powerful members of P2 ever: Francesco Cosentino. That's how Lauro was able to know that Cosentino was the true occult mind of the deviated P2 management of the seizure, and then execution, of Moro. Lauro added that, just in carrying out this role, Cosentino constantly felt with another Mason, whose name is Roberto Zamboni, a doctor. Roberto Zamboni who, incidentally, is not only the protector of Franco Freda, the executor of the 1969 Piazza Fontana fascist massacre connected to the Italian Strategy of Tension, but also the doctor cited as Scientific Director of a so-called Press Information Agency under whose aegis a very peculiar document is issued: a document by the P2 member Aldo Semerari, and whose goal was to try to kill morally the very well-known Italian artist Pier Paolo Pasolini, as Pasolini himself repeatedly underlined. What does CMC have to do with it? It has to do with it because behind that document there was a lawyer, Giorgio Zeppieri, that was a CMC member.
On that Zamboni's and Semerari's document there is also a telephone number and an address. When I revised them, I stumbled in a very special publisher: Giovanni Quattrucci, a Mason at the head of a structure with masonic connotations. It's Great Italy, and Francesco Pazienza had quite a lot to do with it. It's the same Pazienza then condemned for another episode of the Italian Strategy of Tension: the Bologna massacre. And then perhaps we must also ask ourselves what was the true origin of both this massacre and that, previous, in San Benedetto Val di Sambro. Because about the latter - of which, coincidentally, Pasolini spoke, including in his posthumous Petrolio - it emerges that, on that train that, for a bomb on-board, exploded in 1974, Aldo Moro was about to have a trip, but at the very last moment - it was the very same daughter of Moro to reveal it, in April 2004 - he was asked to get off, because he ought to sign some important papers. About the attack in Bologna, which took place at a short geographical distance from the other, someone said that it would have been necessary because that in San Benedetto had a message, and this message had not been understood; it was therefore necessary to repeat it by a new explosion. From there, it has been speculated, even in the presence of trials to say the least wobbly, that to act at the Bologna station were the Palestinians, furious at the failure of the so-called Lodo Moro: a secret agreement, signed by Moro, and with the main clause to always close an eye towards Palestinian terrorism. In the light of what I have outlined above, I think it is more than reasonable to ask whether the terms of the question have not been reversed and, to say it very clear, if in this frightful affair there is instead an Israeli contribution, firmly stressing that no dubt exists that the executors are Mambro and Fioravanti.
I conclude please, allow me - with a last personal note: anyone who wants to use what I wrote today to launch from their own vocal cords phrases like "Hitler was right", or "Death to Israelis" and similar, commits a crime, he did not understand what I have here explained, he, more generally, does not understand anything of life, and he is not my friend.
On the contrary, I trust very much that this article may serve as a reflection for the many enlightened Jews who - to return to JFK - inhabit our little planet: to meditate, I mean, if they want their fate in the hands of a Kissinger or in those of a Diana Frida Arón Svigilsky. The question, all in all, is this one.
