Why Officer Tippit stopped his Killer
#1
Another new article on the Tippit shooting. This one has new info about a possible fight in which everyone disappeared that Tippit might have been responding to, and an unmasking of Mr Tatum.

You know, the Frontline witness, who Milo does not find credible. Neither does the author of this essay.

Nothing places Tatum at the scene when the shooting took place besides his own mouth, but the same can be said of Benavides. This is covered in detail in the long "The Tippit Case in the New Millenium" thread.

It's unclear if the author regards 410 E 10th St as a hastily prepared ambush site, or a place where coincidentally the cop, the cop killer and the cop car in the alley all happened to converge. No mention of the last but he accepts at least part of what Holan had to say, curiously omitting the main point of her account.

In the same Drenas article that mentions the Andrews encounter there is another tantalizing Pulte anecdote.

Dallas radio personality Kevin McCarthy had a number of talk shows dealing with the assassination in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Bill Pulte heard this broadcast and repeated the following to me from memory.

A man called into the radio program and told this story. "My girlfriend told me something that might be important about the Tippit murder. She was driving east on 10th Street behind a police car; she was some distance behind it. The officer in the police car hit his brakes quickly and backed the car up very fast. The woman hit her brakes but could not stop completely and bumped the rear of the police car. She said "Oh no" to herself because she hit the police car and thought that the officer was going to be upset and give her a ticket, but the officer did not pay any attention to her. She backed up went around the police car and drove on her way. Later she recalled that the location where this happened was exactly where Tippit's car was when he was killed, and she realized that she had bumped Tippit's car."

Bill Pulte said that "the caller sounded excited and completely unrehearsed, and the call seemed spontaneous" The caller said that his girlfriend refused to come forward with her story because she did not want to get involved.

I don't think many take this seriously but what rings true is the part about Tippit throwing the car into reverse and backing up quickly, as if he had suddenly observed the patrol car in the alley. Incidentally, the attached view of #10's rear shows a small dent to the right of the "E" in "GALAXIE," although it looks more inside out than outside in.

Putting that aside, the larger question of ambush orchestration is not addressed. A tough nut to crack, I wish the author had something to say about this. It may be bad form to complain about the absence of something from an article, but this issue cuts to the heart of Tippit's murder.

A possibly interesting detail in the photos in the article:

In the photo where Oswald is being escorted (assuming those are the photos immediately after his arrest), Oswald is wearing the brown shirt.

In the lineup photo (not sure when this was taken) Oswald is in a white T-shirt.

Reading the Tippit article at Harvey and Lee a significant point that Mr Armstrong makes is that witnesses state that witnesses describe a man who was wearing a gray jacket and white T shirt (Lee) while Oswald (Harvey) is arrested wearing a brown shirt over the T.

Other accounts from witnesses also state that he was wearing a white T-shirt.

Why is he then in a white T-shirt at the lineup and not the brown shirt he was arrested in, if that is a lineup from Nov 22? or is it a later lineup?

Another in the long series of what some call coincidence?

It seems that all that is missing in the lineup photo is a flashing arrow pointing down above the only guy in a T-shirt.

Milo:

I think he left out the ambush angle because I dealt with it.

he told me that he was writing this before my article appeared. So he then tapered it so as not to be to be too redundant.

Bill: I agree about the line ups. They were a joke.

OK, but your article does not mention the Marsalis accident. I'd like to know if the author considers the accident & stabbing a staged event. If not the Tippit rubout assumes an unconvincing aleatory nature. If Tippit was set up the plot to kill him would not have been triggered by happenstance.

Leaving the big picture aside, the author's summary dismissal of the flight path described by Markham via the alley is dubious:

Quote:All other witnesses saw the gunman flee west on Jefferson Boulevard. No one else saw the gunman go across an empty lot and disappear down the alley.
The alley evidence is discussed at length in the other thread (Cimino, Burt, the Poe/Jez report, Barnes' map), evidently ignored by the author. There were two runners, and the one who fled down the alley did not resemble LHO.

yes he does consider it a staged event.

I was relying largely on McBride in my article and since he only dealt with . the fight scenario glancingly, I did not use it.

Can you provide a link to that other thread?

Per the article Tippit "suddenly hears his police radio crackle to life" and "moves out in a big hurry" to investigate "a reported fight and possible stabbing at the corner of 10th & Marsalis."

I can't find a reference to this fight (or one at 12th & Marsalis) in any of the radio transcripts, and the Drenas article has this:

We do know these facts. There is no transmission on the police radio alerting Tippit to respond to 12th and Marsalis.

What's the source of the reported fight that reached Tippit?

I will ask him about it.

This is his reply:

It is my contention that is was erased. Many people witnessed the fight, the stabbing, and the getaway when they threw the injured man into the back of the car. For example, I've heard of at least three known witnesses. One was the owner of the plumbing supply place on the southeast corner of 10[SUP]th[/SUP] & Marsalis (I believe this was a woman . . . I would have to find her name). Another was Cecil Smith, who spoke to researcher Bill Pulte about the incident, but has since passed away. Yet another was Doris Holan's son, Jimmy Holan, who was down there on his bicycle when it happened.
