An investigation into a claim the SAS was involved in the death of Princess Diana has been welcomed by the family of Henri Paul, her driver on the night she died.

Scotland Yard has confirmed that officers from its specialist crime and operations command are assessing information handed to it recently' by the Royal Military Police.

The extraordinary allegation emerged during the second court martial of Sergeant Danny Nightingale, who was found guilty of illegally possessing a gun and ammunition.

The family of Henri Paul (right) who was driving Princess Diana (left) when she died have welcomed the news that Scotland Yard are assessing information that she was killed by a SAS soldier

Princess Diana and with Dodi Fayed (pictured together on the night they died) were killed alongside Henri Paul when the car crashed in a Paris tunnel

It was outlined in a letter seen by the Daily Mail and written by the mother-in-law of an SAS sniper, known only as Soldier N, who was a key witness for the prosecution.

The eight-page correspondence claims Soldier N boasted it was the SAS that had arranged Princess Diana's death' and that it had been covered up'.

Soldier N is also accused of saying he could enlist the help of his colleagues to ensure his wife the mother of his two children would disappear'.

The letter says Soldier N told his wife there is a box which members of his unit use for private jobs'. They put in the box the name, address and details of what they want done and then one of them who wants to earn extra money does that job.'

When Soldier N was challenged by his mother-in-law, he is accused of saying: Let me stop you right there I kill women and I kill children.'

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed officers are scoping' the details of the new information and assessing its relevance and credibility'.

The jury in the 2008 inquest concluded its verdict as 'unlawful killing, grossly negligent driving of the following vehicles and of the Mercedes', the Met said

An inquest in 2008 found that Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed were unlawfully killed due to the gross negligence' of Mr Paul, a security manager at the Paris Ritz Hotel, who had been drinking.

However, the driver's mother Gisele said she believed her son was murdered together with Diana and Mr Al Fayed when the Mercedes he was driving crashed in an underpass.

Mrs Paul, 83, said: We believe there was a plot to kill the Princess that terrible night in August 1997.

We know in our hearts that our son was murdered and we still live with the hope that one day the truth will be known.'

The new information was also welcomed by Dodi's father, former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, who also insists the couple were murdered. He said he trusted the Metropolitan Police would investigate the new claims with vigour'.

Sergeant Nightingale, 38, was found guilty last month of illegally possessing a pistol and ammunition at a Hereford house he shared with Soldier N.

Soldier N, who is serving a custodial sentence for possessing firearms at the same address, was originally reported to the police by his wife, from whom he is now separated.

The letter was sent to Soldier N's commanding officer in September 2011 and passed to the Service Prosecuting Authority before the start of the Nightingale trial.

All references to the SAS were removed by the SPA.

The paragraph referring to the death of Diana says: He also told her (his wife) that it was the XXX who arranged Princess Diana's death and that has been covered up.'

Soldier N's wife last night told the Daily Mail that she had not spoken to detectives about the allegations.

She said: I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen. The local police are making sure we are okay.'

The new claims were described as mystifying' yesterday by Dai Davies, a former Head of Royal Protection.

Mr Davies insisted the deaths were an accident by any definition' and that three separate inquiries had come to the same independent conclusion'.

A royal spokesman said there would be no comment from the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Harry or Clarence House.

"Soldier N", an apparently "credible" former SAS officer who gave evidence in the Danny Nightingale trial (who was prosecuted for keeping a handgun and ammunition under his bed at home), now claims the SAS assassinated Diana on order from MI6.

Credible one moment, but now said to be a "loose canon"...

Make of it what you will.

Princess Diana assassination claim: SAS man a reliable witness'

THE elite special forces officer behind a new claim that Princess Diana was killed by the SAS should be accepted as a credible witness, an expert on the circumstances of her death said last night.

[Image: pridi-424337.jpg]Princess Diana's death in a Paris car crash has led to conspiracy claims
The explosive new allegation that the Princess was killed by crack SAS soldiers acting on orders from MI6 emerged with the disclosure of a letter written by the officer's mother-in-law. In it she claims he told his wife his crack unit "arranged" Diana's death.
After extracts of the letter were published earlier this week, the officer was branded a "loose cannon" whose word could not be trusted. But now leading investigator John Morgan has come forward to insist the SAS man, known as Soldier N, will emerge as a "witness of truth" and that his allegations will be proved correct.
The author spoke out after the dramatic new allegation forced the Met Police to contact Prince Charles to notify him of their interest. It has prompted widespread calls for a fresh inquiry.
The seven-page letter by Soldier N's mother-in-law was written around the time his marriage collapsed in September 2011. In the letter, the mother-in-law says Soldier N also boasted about killing women and children. She claimed he once threatened to "make his wife disappear".Despite suggestions that Soldier N's claims cannot now be relied upon, only weeks earlier he was regarded as a credible "witness of truth" whose sworn testimony was believed by the military tribunal that convicted his former housemate and fellow SAS sniper Danny Nightingale of illegally possessing a gun and ammunition.
[Image: 69012.jpg]Dodi Fayed also dies in the Paris car crash
Mr Morgan said: "One of the most interesting aspects is that the British authorities have known about this for two years.
"The letter from the mother-in-law of the SAS soldier was sent in September 2011 and its only now in August 2013 they are starting to look into it it shows they don't take this sort of thing seriously.
"The allegation is that Soldier N told his wife the SAS were involved in the assassination of Princes Diana and it's been covered up. Does he dream it up out of thin air? I don't think so. It's hard to believe he would be making this up.
The truth will eventually come out, just not while The Queen is still alive. Prince William will want to know what occurred and he will be pushing for a proper investigation
Mr Morgan
"The other factor is that it does fit with overall picture of the evidence. There is substantial evidence that shows MI6 involvement in the assassination."
Australian Mr Morgan, who has who has written a series of books on Diana's death, said it was well documented that MI6 now known as the Secret Intelligence Service employed SAS operatives on secret missions abroad.
He said it was possible SAS assassins were disguised as motorbike riders following the car in which Diana 36, and her lover Dodi Fayed, 42, the son of Mohamed Al Fayed, were killed. Their Mercedes crashed into a concrete pillar in the Pont de l'Alma underpass in central Paris on August 31,1997.
A jury in the 2008 inquest into their deaths blamed their driver, Henri Paul and paparazzi photographers following them on motorcycles. In his inquest summing up Lord Justice Scott Baker said there was not a shred of evidence to support conspiracy allegations. Operation Paget, a subsequent Met Police inquiry also concluded that the deaths were an accident.
Mr Morgan said: "The truth will eventually come out. It (just) won't come out while The Queen is still alive. (Prince) William will want to know what occurred and he will be pushing to have a proper investigation."
Last night a Yard spokesman said the Met was "scoping information recently received and assessing its relevance and credibility" but stressed it was not a re-investigation.

Is this going to 'go' anywhere...or just filed in the 'do not investigate further' file?~! Is there any push by the UK Public to see this is followed up?~!

Often we utilize our deep understanding of the JFK assassination cover-up as a template for investigations of similar deep political events.

When we apply it to the study of the Diana assassination cover-up, we quickly confront the likelihood that this confession is modeled on the disingenuous mea culpas of confessed JFK "shooters" James Files and Loy Factor, and the designed-to-disinform deathbed tell-all of E. Howard Hunt.

In my view, the story of "Soldier N" is simply too novelistic to be true. He allegedly told his wife that there is a Mission Impossible-esque "box which members of his unit use for private jobs ... They put in the box the name, address and details of what they want done and then one of them who wants to earn extra money does that job."

Reads like classic tradecraft to me.

Look for this story to be torn to pieces as the 50th anniversary of JFK's murder approaches.

Another possibility: A variation of the doppelganger gambit may be in play -- one in which some sort of "official" investigation of the tale concludes that it's probably true. Now why does this seem vaguely familiar?

Oh. Right. The Warren Commission v. House Select Committee on Assassinations respective lone nut and conspiracy conclusions.

Doubt. Endless doubt.

Cover-up. Endless cover-up.

Jan, I think we agree that there is quite a bit of substance to the cliche, "truth can be stranger than fiction."

One sure-fire method of raising informed doubt regarding a story's verisimilitude is to exaggerate even just one of its components.

Might the suggestion box aspect of the "Soldier N" narrative have been concocted, or at least twisted, to raise the very question that I've posed?

Absolutely.

Are we living in a novel of infinite endings?

My family's official philosopher-in-residence was my uncle. He was an auntologist.

There remain, of course, countless alternative endings to this post.

At least that's one possibility.

On the specifics as tradecrafted:

Quote:The letter says Soldier N told his wife there is a box which members of his unit use for private jobs'. They put in the box the name, address and details of what they want done and then one of them who wants to earn extra money does that job.'

When Soldier N was challenged by his mother-in-law, he is accused of saying: Let me stop you right there I kill women and I kill children.'

I agree that this sounds like a plot device.

The history of the creation and uses of the SAS as a stay behind unit able to operate behind enemy lines, and the regiment's strong links with black operations in Ireland, continental Europe and Africa, conducted on a basis of (im)plausible deniability, suggest that field operations would be conducted using a strict and controlled cell structure.

Accounts such as The Feather Men, suggest that a group of "Wise Men" could commission off-the-books operations using former SAS soldiers.

The below is relevant:

Quote:Resistance and Psychological Operations Committee (RPOC)

RPOC was a product of the cold war. Fearing a Soviet takeover of Britain, this right-wing group had links to the Conservative party, the intelligence services and the SAS. In the event of a Soviet invasion of the UK, or any other NATO territory, RPOC would mount an underground resistance operation, using a network of pre-planned and prepared assets. RPOC was part of the government-funded Reserve Forces Association (RFA), an organization setup to represent British military reservists. RPOC was the brainchild of several renowned veterans from World War 2, such as Sir Collin Gubbins, founder of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the Commandos.

Greater Britain 1975 (GB75)

Formed following Harold Wilson's election as Prime minister of the UK in 1974, GB75 was an organization setup by SAS founder, David Stirling, which included ex soldiers, spies and arms dealers, all with links to the military and intelligence apparatus. The more paranoid elements of the right wing establishment feared that Wilson and his government were communist sympathizers, perhaps even Soviet agents. Efforts were made to covertly plan for a coup d'etat against the Wilson government. Stirling was rumoured to be highly sympathetic to action against what he saw as an extreme threat to democracy from the far left. Stirling began building a private force of men to counter this threat, a force that would have been well suited in assisting in any coup.

Could Mechanics have been found in the lumpen SAS?

Put your hand in the box and get a job for cash?

Highly unlikely.

Be told in hushed tones that treachery is afoot, and the Crown is threatened?

Just possible.
