This is relevant. The Daily Star is basically a porn picture sheet with news usually expressed in monosyllables. Indeed, I'm surprized that "Red Anna" isn't pictured pouting topless in their coverage. It is therefore all the more astonishing, and provocative, that the Daily Star appears to have received an exclusive leak about this alleged link and other details of the investigation:

“Early indications are that it is some sort of message, *someone saying, ‘I know who your contacts are and I’m *coming for them’.”

Keen cyclist Gareth, 31, was found dead in his top-floor flat in *Pimlico, west London.

His body had been stuffed into a bag and left in the bath. It was revealed last night that police referred to the crime as a “neat job”, a phrase which officers use to describe the work of a professional.

According to a source Mr *Williams’ body was found *during a “welfare check” by *police following a call from one of his colleagues at GCHQ in Cheltenham.

Trowbridge Ford's core allegation appears to be that the NSA used illegal domestic wiretaps/surveillance to entrap the "Manhattan 11" and this would have been exposed in American courts if they had not been rapidly exchanged for western spies. The mysterious "mediterranean couple" who called at the New Rodina-registered MI6 safe house are alleged to be Anna Chapman's former husband Alex Chapman, and her former roommate Lena Savitskaya.

Ford further alleges that codebreaker Gareth Williams was considering "blowing the whistle" on the illegal surveillance techniques, and was therefore assassinated by slow-acting mushroom poison.

The Bureau's concerns were that spy prosecutions would be seen as the result of an institutionalized fishing expedition for months - what violated the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution about unreasonable searches, and that the "wall" between intelligence and criminal squads had been broken through during the process."The FBI then decided to allow only agents and analysts assigned to intelligence duties access to FISA materials, not the criminal investigators." (26) For good measure, anyone who reviewed transcripts of domestic electronic surveillance must sign a certification that court approval was required before they were handed over to criminal prosecutors. None of this was done, and the Bureau's leaderhip would be in serious trouble if it were exposed by someone with inside credibility.

And that person was Gareth Williams, GCHQ's whiz kid software man who could encrypt messages to remain secret during any transmission or decode any such message, and who was on secondment to MI6 to help out its spies to get what they wanted. While it seems a bit of a stretch that he was actually involved in helping entrap the Manhattan 11, it seems quite clear that he knew that he was in no trouble whatever the Bureau done.(27) When that became important was when a couple visited his safe flat in Mayfair right after the case broke, and apparently started filling him in about what had been conducted from it before he ever arrived, especially the recruitment of Anna Chapman. The couple, quite likely her former husband Alex Chapman, and her former roommate Lena Savitskaya, knew only about the MI6 flat, not who occupied it, explaining why they knocked on other doors first to find out where it was in the building, once they had gained entrance. The meeting resulted in their adopting a plan, it seems, to embarrass NSA/GCHQ as much as possible, with Gareth apparently supplying the funds up front to get it started.

Williams went back to the States in July, and started asking questions about what NSA had really been doing when it came of warrantless eavesdropping, especially after it became clear of Thomas Drake's plight for whistleblowing about the problems at NSA.(28) He faced 35 years in prison for continuing to air his complaints through reporter Gorman who had now moved on to The Wall Street Journal - what he had even tried to get Seymour Hersh to go along with, but without success. Drake's problems just made Williams want to get to the bottom of the covert operations more, so much so that he apparently disclosed his aims to a GCHQ colleague and her husband who were at Fort Meade in his stead, forcing MI6 to transfer them to Denver on another alleged covert mission so that they could not be involved in any further developments.

The assassination of Williams and its cover up were the main problems. He was apparently poisoned by death cap mushrooms, amanita phalloides, just before he left to go back to Britain on 10th August, either by their being placed in the food at his apartment there or while he was eating out somewhere. Shortly after he returned, he suffered the vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, etc. which are characteristic of this kind of poisoning, but he seems not to have taken it seriously. Almost everyone has had such experiences, and almost never have suspected that they were the results of deliberate, deadly poisoning, especially when they soon stopped - what also happened in this case. The only problem was that this was the second stage of the poisoning, and not just getting over some cook's alleged revenge. It apparently ended on the 14th after Williams bought some medication at Harrods Dispensing Pharmacy to deal with the resumption of the problems(29), but by now it was too little too late. Taking pills like rifampicin, antamanide, paclitaxed and the like orally are no substitute for them taken intervenously, especially if one has not at first cleaned out one's gut some way.

The plight of Williams is seen in the video taps of him, both apparently taken on the 14th though the police say that one, the one outside Harrods, was on the 15th. Both show a very jaundiced, feverish soul, dragging himself around as best he can. His palour at the Holland Parik Station is that of a person going into the final stage of phallotoxin poisoning where the cells of the liver are dropping dead.(30) The police want, it seems, to explain away Williams having bought £90-worth of medication on the 14th, and make it look like it was for women's toiletries - the cause of his alleged cross dressing - because they found a bill from the pharmacy at the flat but no signs of the medications. They want to maintain the myth that he was a perfectly healthy person until he surprisingly died for some unknown reason.

When Williams realized he was dying, perhaps on the night of the 14th, there was nothing he could do about it which would make it any better physically or mentally. Calls to family and friends would have only alarmed them, and alerted them that he was being murdered for some alleged betrayal. Going to a hospital or a doctor would end with results even worse. So he just allowed himself to die, slowly in his flat. The death could have occurred any time after the 15th, as the process usually takes between six and sixteen days after ingesting the poison. Williams hoped that the murder scene would be seen as such by the police when they finally discovered it.

It seems that Williams dead or dying was discovered by British covert agents, helping out NSA in the process. They were the ones who let themselves into the flat, found Williams' body, moved it into the carryall, zipped it up and padlocked it, recovered all his medicines, and then let themselves out, locking the door behind them. They hoped that investigators would see it as the result of some sex game, gone wrong. The only thing they overlooked was leaving the receipt for Williams' medical assistance.

It was most interesting that NSA immedidately and unprecedentally denied that his death had anything to do with its operations.(31) An alleged former CIA officer in London was sure that it had nothing to do with his work. Now the investigation of the murder is in a state of suspended animation, letting the Bureau agents see if they can connect the Mediterranean-looking couple to the killing - apparently a lead to Alex Chapman and his femal associate - and if they can't, Williams will be written off as an accidental self-killing, like that of former GMP Chief Constable Mike Todd.

I'm not convinced that Alex 'n Lena are the "mysterious mediterranean couple".

Some of the other details of Trowbridge H Ford's hypothesis seem stretched too. Would MI6 codebreaker Gareth Williams really have decided to expose illegal NSA activity after complete strangers Alex and Lena turned up unannounced at his flat? Williams was surely involved in similarly illegal activity almost every day of his working life for MI6 and/or the NSA.

Also, although the "Manhattan 11" incident is very murky, there does seem to have been espionage of a single/double/triple nature involved, and thus, to an MI6/NSA employee like Williams, surely the use of illegal surveillance to identify "sleeper spies" would have been justified.

I do believe Williams may have been murdered because he was about to blow the whistle on illegal behaviour by an intelligence agency, perhaps involving money laundering or targetted assassinations in Afghanistan.

But domestic surveillance?

Anyone who spends more than a nanosecond looking at the evidence knows that our intelligence agencies collect and monitor as much information as they can about us all - whether citizens or foreign nationals. So, I'm not even convinced it's possilbe to "blow the whistle" on this matter, because it's already public domain.

With respect to Trowbridge Ford, who has written many important articles, I'm not buying into this one in the absence of further evidence.

David Cameron was forced to admit yesterday that a British aid worker taken hostage in Afghanistan may have been killed by US special forces and not her captors as previously claimed.

Fresh evidence had come to light that Linda Norgrove, 36, could well have died as a result of a grenade thrown by soldiers as they tried to rescue her from Taliban captors on Friday, the prime minister said.

Cameron said earlier reports of how she had died were "deeply regrettable" but had been made in good faith.

Nato and British government sources told journalists on Sunday that Norgrove died when a hostage-taker detonated a bomb as Nato forces tried to free her.

The disclosure will raise difficult questions about the rescue operation and the way the media operation has disseminated the suggestion that Norgrove died at the hands of her captors.

After Cameron's statement, Nato was left denying suggestions that it had manipulated the truth. One source said senior Nato officials were angry that US forces had engaged in a "deliberate deception".

Norgrove was killed in the raid by US forces in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province, after she and three colleagues were kidnapped two weeks earlier.

Downing Street said Cameron had spoken to US president Barack Obama who offered his condolences for Norgrove's death. "The prime minister and the president agreed that it was now essential to get to the bottom of what had happened in the course of the rescue operation," the statement said.

Earlier yesterday Cameron told a Downing Street press conference that he was told of the latest developments in a phone call from General David Petraeus, the top allied commander in Afghanistan. As a result, a full US-UK investigation has been launched into the incident, he said. Asked whether there was any suggestion US forces were reckless, the prime minister said: "We must get to the bottom of what happened; we only have sketchy information … Petraeus deeply regrets what happened, as do I."

The prime minister had to delay his scheduled press conference for an hour while he informed Norgrove's parents and younger sister of the "deeply distressing development".

So far, the family have declined to make any comment on their daughter's death and the operation to free her. John Norgrove, Linda's father, speaking from the family home in the Isle of Lewis, indicated he may speak at a later date.

Last nightit emerged that Norgrove's family had not been asked to approve the raid nor were told about it before it happened. It is understood that US forces' policy is to ask the hostage's family for prior approval before launching a rescue mission. British forces act without asking.

One British official said the Norgrove family had been told that a military rescue mission was possible but were not asked for their approval when the final decision was taken. "What we would never do is put the family in the situation where they are asked for a yes-no on going ahead with the action. That would put them in the invidious position of having to own the consequences of whatever decision was taken, which is properly the job of governments," the official said.

Surveillance footage of the rescue attempt, showing a US soldier throwing a grenade into the room where Norgrove was being held, led to yesterday's development according to the US military.

"The review showed what was believed to be a member of the rescue team throwing a grenade into the area where Miss Norgrove was being held," said Major Sunset Belinsky, a Nato spokeswoman.

But on Sunday, a Nato spokesmen said that an insurgent standing near Norgrove had "detonated an explosive device that was attached to his person" as American special forces dropped into the compound by helicopter. "He was in close enough proximity to Ms Norgrove. She was wounded," said spokesman Dominic Medley. "She was evacuated but succumbed to her wounds."

British defence sources said there was "very little UK military involvement" in planning the rescue attempt. In another official statement on her death, Hague told the House of Commons that he had authorised a military operation to rescue Norgrove "from the very beginning".

"All such rescue operations involve a measure of risk which has to be weighed against a constant risk to a hostage and a risk that such an opportunity to undertake a rescue operation may not recur," he said.

He said that British special forces liaised with their US counterparts, but did not play any role in planning or carrying out the rescue attempt.

Shadow foreign secretary Yvette Cooper condemned the actions of the hostage takers, but told MPs there was "concern" about the "potentially inaccurate information that was disseminated over the course of the weekend".

One former defence minister told the Guardian that the US-led investigation into Norgrove will be followed closely by the opposition. "They have shown that they cannot be fully trusted on this one," he said.

The assassination of Norgrove, taken in conjunction with that of Williams, seems to firm up the suspicion that MI6 has been a) engaged in some form of controversial work in Afghanistan; b) that this work is most likely to do with negotiations for withdrawal; and c) is being targeted by one or more US faction(s) opposed to such moves.

This mystery has more twists and turns than a corkscrew. We're back to mystery fluid...and lots of new changes and clues [real or red-herrings?]...... However, as a toxicologist the mushroom described would be a stupid choice....there are much better mushrooms and even 'better' more exotic poisons knows to the secret services and 'others'. That part is definitely red-herring. Certainly the U.S. British, Russians and several other countries intel agencies could have done this professionally. BUT it is CLEAR that to the rather great extent the UK's MI5/6 know what did or might have happened, they prefer to just weave a web of confusion and obfuscation. I imagine in the end we'll know as much about this as of who/what/why for the 134.5 billion in bearer bonds over the Italian/Swiss border...remember that one?....the story died...never resolved. Earlier in this thread I noted the line in the Daily Telegraph about Gareth Williams that: "The 31-year-old was seconded from GCHQ to work on top-secret systems to defend British banks and transport infrastructure from cyber attack and to eavesdrop on terrorist communications."

I don't consider it much of a leap to suppose that Williams may have learnt, and even been given access to, instances of money laundering - either by criminal structures or for British/American national security purposes.
