The US had a secret surveillance group in Oslo

On Wednesday evening, it was exposed by TV 2 News, that many hundreds of Norwegians have been secretly surveilled by a agents of a foreign power. This is clearly against the Norwegian law.
These citizens were registered as terrorists in SIMAS.

Norwegian ministers claim that they have not known about this secret group, or the surveillance.

Norwegian citizens have been surveilled by a secret group with close contacts to the US embassy during the last ten years. That is, the group got its assignment from, and reported to the Security of the embassy, all "for the protection of the embassy".

The group, containing 15 to 20 persons, working around the clock. The personnel consisted of former, higher, police officers. The Surveillance Detection Unit (SDU), was established in 1998. The surveillance program, reporting to the data base, SIMAS (Security Incident Management Analysis System) probably started in the beginning of 2000, in Norway. Similar groups might exist in other European countries.

Thanks for that. I just sent it to my Norsk friends...having lived there many years and speaking the language. No surprise to me. Sweden was always the 'easy touch' for US Intel, but Norway [certain segments of it] were 'accessible'.... I'll follow this story on the Norwegian media and keep everyone informed. First impression is shock and dismay by the Norwegians....but....not the first such reaction by Norwegians about American actions. :flute:

The Swedish Minister for Justice, Beatrice Ask, have now admitted that a surveillance similar to the one in Norway (involving a Surveillance Detection Unit / SDU) has taken place in Sweden since around 2000. However, nobody knew, not the Justice Department, not the Government (including Ask), not the police, not the Sicherheitsdienst (SÄPO) itself knew. If we are to believe them... The authorities are now going to investigate further.

Surprisingly (???) it is now also found out that the Israeli embassy in Stockholm has a unit similar to the American one. This unit however operates with co-operation from the police and the Sicherheitsdienst (SÄPO), and has done so for “several years”! The Minister of Justice (Ask) of course does not know... And police and SÄPO tops don't know, so they are able to deny knowledge...
The police helps for example with “background” of car owners from different registers - are they convicted, are they known or surveilled by the police, etc. - it has all been “run smoothly”, and hundreds of bottles of liquor are delivered to many policemen at Christmas...

That's pretty amazing! First, SÄPO is very close [some persons in it] to the CIA and US Intel, generally. So, who made up this group....boyscouts? I'm sure if one were to look there would be similar in Finland and Denmark and many other countries......the USA trusts no one!!.....not even its own citizens [or especially its own citizens!].....

As for the Israeli equivalent...they wouldn't have been operational about the time Palme was assassinated, would they? [or the American one, for that matter]...my research showed that parts of the Oliver North/Iran-Contra network, some right-wing police in the Norrmalms Police, Bofors agents and others 'bumped-off' Palme and made it look like the work of a lone and drunk 'nut' [patsy]....wouldn't surprise me if the Israeli's were also involved...would fit the picture. There are some hints of S.A. having had an agent or two involved and they were hand and glove with Israel at the time...and Israel certainly had minor involvement in Iran-Contra.

The probe to see if illegal intelligence gathering has taken place was launched after the Swedish Security Police at the weekend confirmed the US embassy had a surveillance system in place since 2000, without informing the local authorities.
The Swedish office of public prosecution said in a statement that a preliminary probe had been opened to see whether the US measures constituted a crime and to see who had carried out such a crime, if one had been committed.
"The investigation concerns American measures to protect the US embassy in Stockholm and American personnel," the statement said.
The US embassy in Stockholm said in a statement at the weekend that it did have a program to detect suspicious activities around its facilities. It said the system was neither secret nor an intelligence program.

The issue first came up in Norway last week when television network TV2 reported that a team of US agents and retired Norwegian security officers had been conducting illegal systematic surveillance from a base near the US embassy in Oslo.
The Norwegian Foreign Ministry has said it is seeking an explanation from the US side.

America has been accused of illegally spying on hundreds of people in Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Iceland.

Officials in the five countries expressed their unhappiness at surveillance tactics that were conducted without the knowledge of the individual nations' governments.

America claims officials informed the Norwegian government about the operation which was aimed at terror suspects.

In other instances, it has stated it has 'nothing to hide'. But Danish security services have stated they will begin an investigation into the matter if evidence of illegal surveillance is uncovered.

The diplomatic dispute erupted on November 3 when Norwegian media outlet TV2 screened a report stating that a group of US agents has been surveilling 15 to 20 Norwegian for 10 years, mostly at various rallies.
It stated potential terrorists were photographed, and the information was sent to Washington, to prevent terrorist attacks against U.S. embassies.

A spokesman of the U.S. State Department, Philip Crowley, said that the Norwegian authorities were notified about their covert operation.

'We are implementing the program throughout the world and are vigilant against people who can keep track of our embassies, as we understand that our diplomatic missions are a potential target,' said Mr Crowley.

However, Norway disagrees and a representative of the American embassy was called to the Norwegian Foreign Ministry for an explanation, according to Russian online newspaper Pravda.

When the Norwegian case became public knowledge, Denmark also raised its concerns about the surveillance of its citizens.

Danish newspaper Politiken claimed that all American embassies have surveillance teams to address threats to the U.S. security.

Former head of the Danish security service PET Jorgen Bonniksen said that he had never heard of such groups: 'If this is true, then we have to deal with illegal intelligence operations in Denmark.

'On Danish territory such operations can be conducted by PET, and PET only.'
The current head of PET, Jakob Scharf, said that if illegal activity is determined, 'of course, we will take action.'

Sweden followed suit, with Minister of Justice Beatrice Ask stating U.S. Embassy staff in Stockholm have been spying on people there since 2000.
The head of the Stockholm's security police, Anders Danielsson, directly accused the U.S. of violating international norms, stating, 'The Swedish security police (SAPO) did not give the U.S. a permission to engage in activities that are contrary to Swedish law.'

Again the U.S said it had notified Sweden of its actions, but representatives also said they 'have nothing to hide'.
Finland weighed last week when authorities in Helsinki declared that they did not believe American reassurances that there was no illegal activity.

Iceland completed the picture in Scandinavia when it declared that it suspected members of the American Embassy in Reykjavik of espionage.

'There is nothing surprising here,' Intelligence expert and author Alexander Kolpakidi told Pravda.ru.
'U.S. intelligence services have always behaved that way around the globe.

'Virtually all countries of the world, including the members of European Union and NATO, have secret CIA tracking stations.'

Sweden is ending its investigation against the American embassy for its alleged surveillance of people outside the diplomatic area in Stockholm.

Swedish chief prosecutor Tomas Lindstrand said the reason for dropping the case is because it is not possible to prove that a crime was committed.
Swedish Radio news reports that the investigation was difficult, because many who were suspected for carrying out the surveillance chose not to cooperate, citing professional secrecy when it comes to the embassies.
Media reports in the fall indicated that the American authorities and embassies have been keeping watch over some people in Sweden, Norway and other countries since 2000.
Swedish justice minister, Beatrice Ask, said at that time that she was not aware of the surveillance. And the opposiition went to the standing committee on the Constitution for answers.
"We have not received access to the American embassy's archive," Linstrand told Swedish Radio news. "The Vienna Convention says that embassy archives are inviolable. So, there's a lack of knowledge, in part when it comes to hearings with certain people, and in part when it comes to what's in the archive. So, the investigation is simply coming to a stop."
But media reports hint that while the matter has been dropped by Swedish legal authorities, it may now become a question for Swedish politicians to pursue.
