Quote:Much of John C Lilly's dolphin and sensory deprivation work was funded by the Military-Industrial-Complex. I actually own one of Lilly's books about sensory deprivation.I was extremely interested in his "sensory deprivation tanks".This was back in the day when I was experimenting with LSD. My problem was that I was in chronic pain all the time, and this pain would keep me from relaxing enough to enter the "deep self".In his tanks,Lilly would use a heavy salt water solution that would float your body.Small companies sprang up making various types of deprivation tanks. It was years later that I found out Lilly was working as an MK-ULTRA scientist. Like Jan's question, was he witting or unwitting?I don't know........

Keith - thank you for sharing those memories.
A supposedly "top secret" US Navy programme resulted in dolphins being used operationally in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, and in the first Iraq War. I can't find my notes on this, but there's a fairly sanitized PBS version here.

I think they call it PROGRESS. :moon:

Story of one of the Navy's Cam Ranh Bay dolphins going "AWOL" here.
Quote:"The dolphins were deployed at night to small boats called 'Sentry Vehicle Stations' in which the dolphin works," said Goforth. The dolphins each surveyed a 180-degree segment of the bay around the pier using their echo-location senses, which Goforth said are better than any human device. "They (the dolphins) had a paddle at one end of the pen to tell them to search and a 'Yes' and 'No' paddle at the other end," said Goforth. The dolphins got a fish if they saw something and were then released to rout out the enemy swimmer or anyone pretending to be a swimmer for training purposes.

Quote:One dolphin went AWOL because during the day, South Vietnamese patrolling against enemy swimmers randomly tossed hand grenades into the bay. "The mammal couldn't stand the noise and just took off," said Goforth. Hahaha: I wonder if the dolphin ended up in LBJ? (Long Binh Jail) Sorry getting off topic again....:cleanears:
