How the Occupy Movement Helped Americans Move Beyond Denial and Depression to Action
The spirit of liberation psychology--a tradition from Latin American protest movements--has been embraced by U.S. Occupy participants.

While the term liberation psychology is less commonly known in the United States than in Latin America, the spirit of liberation psychology has been embraced by U.S. Occupy participants.
Liberation psychology, unlike mainstream psychology, questions adjustment to the societal status quo, and it energizes oppressed people to resist all injustices. Liberation psychology attempts to discover how demoralized people can regain the energy necessary to take back the power that they had handed over to illegitimate authorities.
The Occupy movement has tapped into the energy supply that many oppressed and exploited people ultimately discover. We discover it when we come out of denial that we are a subjugated people. We discover just how energizing it can be to delegitimize oppressive institutions and authorities. And when these oppressive authorities react violently to peaceful resistance, their violence validates their illegitimacyand provides us with even more energy.
With liberation psychology, we no longer take seriously the elite's rigged games that had sucked us in and then sucked the energy out of us. We move beyond denial and depression that the U.S. electoral process is a rigged game, an exercise in learned helplessness in which we are given the choice between politicians who will either (1) screw us, or (2) screw us. We begin to engage in other "battlegrounds for democracy."
Corporate-collaborating journalists, politicians and other lackeys of the elite ask, "What are the goals of the Occupy movement?" They are deaf to the answer no matter how loud we yell. If they did understand, they would then have to stop being lackeys. But their elite bosses do understand that the Occupy movement is a demand for economic fairnessa frightening prospect for the elite. The elite then divide into two camps: (1) throw the demonstrators a bone so they go away, but give them no power; or (2) give them nothing, just destroy them. This is not news to liberation psychologists.
Origins of Liberation Psychology
Ignacio Martin-Baró (19421989) was both a Jesuit priest and a social psychologist in El Salvador, and it is he who should be given credit for popularizing the term liberation psychology. As a priest, Martin-Baró embraced liberation theology in opposition to a theology that oppressed the poor, and as a psychologist, he believed that imported North American psychology also oppressed marginalized people throughout Latin America.
Many liberation psychologists, including Martin-Baró, have gleaned much from Paulo Freire (1921-1997), Brazilian educator and author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Freire stressed the importance of conscientizaçãocritical consciousness and awareness of the effects of trying to operate within an alienating and dehumanizing social structure. Freire recognized a certain psychology of oppression in which the downtrodden become fatalistic, believing they are powerless to alter their circumstances, thus becoming resigned to their situation.
With critical consciousness, individuals can identify both external oppression and self-imposed internal oppression. Critical consciousness is aimed at ending fatalism so that one can free oneself from self-imposed powerlessness. It is a process in which changes in one's internal world result in taking actions to change one's external world, and taking actions changes one's internal world.

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to support a resolution calling for a constitutional amendment that would assert that corporations are not entitled to constitutional rights, and that money is not the same as free speech.
The resolution was backed by Move to Amend, a national coalition working to abolish corporate personhood and overturn U.S. Supreme Court's controversial Citizens United ruling. The decision gave corporations and unions the ability to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence elections, so long as their actions are not coordinated with a candidate's campaign.
"Move to Amend's proposed amendment would provide the basis for overturning the recent Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission," stated Mary Beth Fielder, Co-Coordinator of LA Move to Amend. "The Supreme Court has no legitimate right to grant people's rights to corporations. We must clearly establish that it is we, The People, who are meant to rule."
City Council President Eric Garcetti sponsored the resolution, according to the Los Angeles Times. He said the largely-symbolic legislation was necessary because "big special interest money" was causing gridlock in Washington.
Move to Amend hopes that to get similar resolutions approved across the nation through city councils and direct vote by ballot initiative.
"Our plan is build a movement that will drive this issue into Congress from the grassroots," stated Mary Beth Fielder, Co-Coordinator of LA Move to Amend. "The American people are behind us on this and these campaigns help our federal representatives see that we mean business. Our very democracy is at stake. Our goal is for 50 towns and cities to put Move to Amend's resolution on the ballot for the Presidential election in November, 2012."
Democratic Sens. Tom Udall of New Mexico and Michael Bennet of Colorado have introduced a constitutional amendment that would overturn Citizens United by granting Congress and the states the authority to regulate the campaign finance system. The amendment would not dictate any specific policies or regulations, Udall said, so that it could garner some support from Republicans, who have blocked attempts to overturn the ruling in the past.

As I write this, San Francisco is being raided with NO warning. All tents and property destroyed, arrests ongoing...the usual! The tents were ripped and cut before being put in a compressor garbage truck along with backpacks, clothes, cameras and laptops, etc. Even bicycles were thrown away. So, the last large Occupy has been removed by DHS with the SFPD doing the dirty work.

After a tense standoff with protesters at the Occupy SF encampment on Justin Herman Plaza, city officials dismantled the camp early this morning, transforming the six-week-old tent city housing hundreds of people back to its original state in a matter of hours.
The much-anticipated raid comes after weeks of the San Francisco Police Department clipping the size of Occupy SF's encampments, first by taking out a line of tents along Market Street called the Bridge, then by disbanding the original base camp outside the Federal Reserve Building.
Then, last Thursday in what the press called the Battle of the Barricades, police set up barricades along the perimeter of the camp, which created a tense situation and heightened fears of a raid.
This morning's raid started at 1:45 a.m. caught occupiers completely off-guard. Police quickly surrounded the camp before they knew what hit them. Occupiers were given five minutes to collect their belongings and leave, or face arrest.
Throughout the night, there were at least 40 arrests observed, though no official numbers were available at press time.
"I woke up and heard, raid, raid, raid,'" recounted Robert Benson. "It happened so fast."
One occupier who was arrested, William "Red" Hollis, recounted how after refusing to leave the Plaza, police threw him to the ground and rubbed his face into the pavement. He had a number of cuts and bruises on his cheek and ear. He was cited and released.
It was a tense night as protesters defied an order to get out of Market Street. They dragged tables and chairs from nearby businesses and set them up in front of the police line. Meanwhile, Department of Public Works workers dismantled the camp behind the line, tossing tents, belongings and supplies into parked garbage trucks.
James, who lived at the camp for two months, said he was in Chinatown when he say all the lights from the police vehicles. He knew something was up.
"SFPD is so indifferent about this," he said, pointing to the line of officiers, "look at them. Hundreds of people are homeless over night."
Unlike the last raid in Oakland, where police dismantled the camp on Frank Ogawa Plaza for a second, but non-violent manner, there were a number of incidents where SFPD used force against protesters.
After occupiers were dislodged from their camp, a minor scuffle broke out on Market as police officers riding dirt bikes, along with a group of riot police, chased a number of protesters around.
A few protesters grabbed at police officers on their bikes as police rode up on people, and a number of riot police used batons to pushed people back while an arrest was being made.
Police also made quick blitzes on the hundred or so people protesting on Market Street, making group arrests in the process. The first occasion police warned protesters to get onto the sidewalk, and after failing to do so, riot police quickly surrounded at least 20 protesters and arrested them.
This reporter witnessed police pushing two protesters who were on one of the sidewalks along Market Street into the street, and they were arrested along with the others.
The second time police moved on the protesters, there was no warning. As frantic protesters tried to break for the sidewalk, a few of them were pushed down onto the ground by the charging riot police; one officier used his baton to move people onto the street.
Protesters plan to have a rally at noon today outside the Ferry building, and another at 6 p.m. to determine what happens next.

There was much scepticism among US governing circles about the establishment of Israel, and no one was talking about recognizing it. The situation was exacerbated by the fact that categorical objections against the establishment of the Israeli state were levelled by the very influential and popular secretary of state, George Marshall. The State Department was governed by the same mood. Truman had no reason to receive Weizmann, but Jacobson pointed to the vast influence of Jews in the media. The two largest US newspapers - The New York Times and The Washington Post - belonged to influential Jewish dynasties. Jacobson promised vast media support for Truman's reelection campaign if only he received Weizmann. The meeting between Weizmann and Truman occurred on March 18, 1948, and that determined the fate not just of Israel, but also of Truman himself. On May 15, 1948, eleven minutes after the Israeli state was proclaimed in Tel Aviv, Truman signed a declaration on recognition of the new state and instructed the US delegation to be so informed. In his memoirs, Truman goes into great detail about how lonely he felt on the matter and the difficulties which he had to overcome before his policies vis-a-vis Israel were recognized to be the right ones. The greatest sceptics were convinced by the November election results, when Truman celebrated victory despite all previous forecasts. In all subsequent US presidential election campaigns, candidates did everything they could to prove that they were greater supporters of Israel. They had good reason to believe that victory would rest with the candidate who earned the greatest support from the Jewish lobby. So what does that have to do with Zatlers' meeting with Soros? Let us remember the circumstances under which Zatlers became our country's president. Soros-controlled media, with the newspaper Diena at the front, organized true psychological terrorism against Zatlers, with a public execution on the day when he was inaugurated. I am sad to say that the president emerged from this a broken man, and he has not recovered to this very day. His hand never trembled when he conducted the most complicated operations, but now he became very uncertain and unsure about himself. The constitutional authority of our president is seemingly negligible, but he does have substantial influence in the political process. The meeting with Soros means a bilateral transaction which, on the one hand, promises the president's support for the political and economic group that is represented by the Soros people. On the other hand, it also means that the media which are controlled by these people will support the president. Essentially this meeting means that the Soros people will potentially support the election of the president for a second term. If the transaction is crowned with mutually advantageous results, that will create a precedent for future presidential candidates. That's what happened on Thursday, when George Soros, the billionaire donor to the Democratic Party, and Republican President George W. Bush appeared at separate events to discuss the global financial crisis.Soros spoke to a congressional committee hearing in Washington , while Bush spoke to an event sponsored by the pro-free-market Manhattan Institute in New York City.
Let's quickly run through some of the similarities in the two speeches.
First, both Soros and Bush blamed the current global economic turmoil on the same event-- the collapse of the U.S. mortgage bubble . . . Soros spoke about how he believes "in view of the tremendous losses suffered by the general public, there is a real danger that excessive deregulation will be succeeded by punitive reregulation. That would be unfortunate because regulations are liable to be even more deficient than the market mechanism [in moderating investor behaviour]...[R]egulators are not only human but also bureaucratic and susceptible to lobbying and corruption." Soros hopes that legislators can "preempt a regulatory overkill" by thinking carefully about any reforms to the financial system.
Bush made the same point, but put it a bit differently. He conceded that "we must ensure that markets, firms, and financial products are properly regulated." He also noted that "some blame the crisis on insufficient regulation of the American mortgage market," and countered that "many European countries had much more extensive regulations [than the U.S.], and still experienced problems almost identical to our own."

Such are the facts. I do not know what is occurring in the Georgian capital right now, but according to some information journalists are being persecuted there. Some of them are even possibly arrested, I guess. But on the whole it is a very harmful and dangerous path when leaders attempt to dictate to the press a particular assessment of what is happening and do not allow it to honestly report on events and things seen. Here's one example. When I went to Tskhinval and Sukhum about ten days ago, before the trip two Georgian television channels which operate in Moscow had asked us to take their correspondents and cameramen to South Ossetia and Abkhazia along with us. We had agreed. These correspondents and cameramen filmed many stories, spoke to residents in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and filmed destructions in Tskhinval and in other parts of South Ossetia. I was interested to know what of all that footage would later be shown on Georgian television. We asked staff members at our embassy, which so far remains in Georgia, because Mikhail Saakashvili has broken off diplomatic relations, but it is not yet clear how the Georgian side wants to retain some of its presence in Russia; accordingly the presence of Russia in Georgia will depend on this, but for the time being we have our staff there ' well I asked them how the reports of these two television channels whose correspondents had traveled with us on that trip were being presented. I was told that there were a few very brief, absolutely neutral stories, from which one could form no idea of the extent of the devastation which the Georgian action had inflicted upon South Ossetia or of the emotions South Ossetian residents had splashed out in communication with the journalists. This has to be sorted out. The chief thing is that the rules should not be violated on the basis of which the world body and all of its entities, funds and programs operate. Interestingly, she even uses the language that this process would end "open society" - which is the favorite phrase of Soros all along, Soros who with his OSI (Open Society Institute) provides the false liberal and false democratic "open"society. When reading her stuff, it strikes me how almost every sentence smells like Soros - Soros uses all this peculiar fake liberal language and she even uses all his favorite phrases in her writing. She is definitely part of the controlled opposition of our false paradigm. I'll try to find more things linking her to Soros - there is quite a bit as I remember from prior research.
I do not know her to necessarily report directly to Soros but have always understood her to work closely with Soros but also be an independent parallel to Soros working on the same schemes, depending on what it is. And that would be consistent with Rhodes scholars also. Take Rachel Maddow - same thing, another Rhodes scholar doing the opinion-making and gate-keeping of controlled opposition for the Rothschilds - Maddow is almost a parallel to Wolf.
The reference in her bio above with Rhodes scholarship alone should provide abundant proof for what team Wolf plays on if you are familiar with what Rhodes is.

I happen to know this Wahhabi tribe in Sandzak on the Serbia/Montenegro border quite well. I am from that country, remember? ... I am not against OWS. I respect the protest. I am worried about the money bags behind it belonging to Soros, Adbusters, Tides Foundation which is all the same thing as Soros. What would happen if everybody in OWS plus the rest of us at home sympathizing with it stopped paying taxes right now? Wait, I do not mean criminal evasion. I mean - fill out a new W4 at work and claim "exempt" on January 1, 2012. That means no taxes are taken out. Now you put it in a savings account and let it accrue interest. And pay it to them on April 15, 2013 in a lump sum. You will make them wait for 16 months from start date. You keep the interest and the war machine is starved of significant fuel if millions of people did that and it is legal and there is no penalty if you pay up by April 15, 2013. Remember that trillion annually for wars they take from our IRS funds. Make them wait for your portion of it. If millions delayed paying taxes, the war machine would run out of gas fast.
And stop using and paying for credit cards. I got rid of all of mine. Stop using debit cards and carry cash again. Stop leaving money in the bank and stuff cash under that mattress, excess to gold or something secure. Cut the Christmas shopping spree to a scant absolute minimum and let them sit on the crap from China. I buy only a fraction of the food I used to buy - found ways around most of it. I sprout endless sprouts now and sautee them, make salads, sandwiches and stopped buying most cardboard-tasting vegetables. It's mostly Monsanto anyway. Am I following my own advice? Virtually all of it to the degree that I can which is most of it. We don't think about how much impact we can make if we simply withdraw from the matrix. Not a full withdrawal back to the Neanderthal caves. But all that we can and consciously think about everything we do and see how much of it we can eliminate and produce things ourselves, barter, swap, cop-op, buy local and strictly US-produced, buy second-hand instead of new cheap crap from China, stop feeding their banks, corporations and delay paying their tax monster. I once had a boss who refused to give me a raise the year he and his wife bought a big, expensive house. "You have done a great job for us this year. I don't know what we'd do without you, but we just can't afford it right now," he said.
As Director of Sales and Marketing, I had done a great job. Sales had increased more than 20% that year. Because of my work and the work of my colleagues, our boss was able to buy the house that prevented him from rewarding us for making him more money.
What did I do? I did what the majority of Americans do, I went to work the next day. I continued to do a great job. I made him even more money the next year.
My story, although years ago, is neither unique nor dated. In fact, I would say my story, which took place during the time of Reagan, is a perfect allegory for Occupy Wall Street and for our days of austerity.'
Austerity.' I hate that word. Strictly speaking, it means cutting budgets, cutting benefits. In reality, as most of us know, it is wealth redistribution of the worst kind. Austerity means that those of us who stretch pennies will be forced to suffer so those who stretch limos will not.
The wealthy, the business owners, are called the job creators. Jobs, however, are not created out of thin air. Business owners don't hire because they have extra money in their pockets. They hire because their business is doing well, because the employees are doing their jobs well enough to provide a quality product or service, because customers are buying. Each of us that work, each of us that spend, is a job creator.
I wish I was a braver person twenty plus years ago. I wish I'd have walked out on that day I was denied a raise. At the time, I was looking at the short term. I needed my salary, small as it was. I liked my job. I was good at it. As someone just starting out in my career, the title looked very good on my resume. I should have let them hire someone else at my wage, someone less smart, someone less dedicated, someone less experienced, someone who wouldn't have afforded them their European vacation the next year. Instead, I suffered in near silence (less the grumbling with coworkers who were also denied raises). The next year, I was denied a raise as well. Why? Because they knew I wouldn't leave. My limits had been tested and as far as they were concerned, I had none. I did leave that year, but only because life took me to another city.
Americans are becoming braver. We are tired of being told that the sacrifice needs to lie in the laps of those who can least afford it. We are tired of the wealthy thumbing their noses at us, cutting our wages, our benefits, our jobs, our livelihoods, so their lifestyles won't suffer.
Since I had that job, American citizens have lost even more power. As a nation of 300 million, our buying clout is dwarfed by the rest of the world's billions. Jobs are being automated or sent overseas, but we do still have power. Without sales people, businesses will fail. Without technicians, businesses will fail. Without labor, businesses will fail. Without customer service, businesses will fail. I could go on, but if a business hires an employee, that employee is necessary to the success of the business. They are necessary in growing the wealth of their employers.
Am I calling for a strike? I can't presume to know what is feasible for any individual, but it might be the only way to push the reset button on 30 years of income redistribution.
They're doing it in the UK, where 700,000 public sector workers will see their jobs cut by 2017. These words might be music to Republican ears, but in a country a fifth our size, there will be 700,000 fewer people contributing to the economy. In response, the British people are calling for the largest strike in three decades, two million workers.
We're starting to see it here, with Occupy Wall Street, but so far, just a fraction of the population has participated. There has to be a next step, one which will truly impact those who are thriving at the expense of the 99%. Is a general strike the next move for the US?
