Sensitive items vanish at JBLM; company still on lockdown

"Sensitive" items are missing from a Joint Base Lewis-McChord Stryker brigade, leading to an entire infantry company being placed on lockdown while the Army conducts a criminal investigation, the Army said Saturday.
The company under investigation is from the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, said Lewis-McChord spokesman Matt Hinkle.
He estimated the size of the company at 100 to 200 soldiers.
"They'll be on base until the items are found," Hinkle said. "This is the unit's property that's come up missing."
Hinkle and I Corps spokesman Lt. Col. Gary Dangerfield both said they don't know what items are missing.
The 4th Brigade has been to Iraq twice; it currently doesn't have deployment orders. It is one of the base's three Stryker combat brigades.
Dangerfield said the company is restricted to its barracks on Lewis-McChord. He said he didn't know which company is being investigated.
A range of military items are considered sensitive, such as night-vision goggles and military identification cards, Dangerfield said.
Hinkle said he first heard a report of missing items Thursday.
The Army is conducting a criminal investigation, interviewing soldiers and trying to recover the items, Dangerfield said. Results of the investigation will be made public, he said.
"We're going to continue to conduct this investigation as thoroughly as possible," Dangerfield said. "We will get to the bottom of this matter."
