'Sense of urgency' in search for missing FBI agent

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies sesarched the Verdugo Mountains on Monday in what officials called an "urgent" effort to find a missing FBI agent.

Stephen Ivens,35, was last seen last week. He left on foot from his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road in Burbank on Friday morning and was reported missing by his family a short time later.

An avid hiker who is married and the father of a young child, Ivens was believed to be carrying his handgun, although he is not considered to be a threat to anyone but himself, according to authorities. Authorities have not said why Ivens was despondent and continued to urge anyone who sees him to call authorities rather than approach him.

There is an "obvious sense of urgency to find him because of the missing weapon and scenarios associated with that that could pose a threat to public safety," Laura Eimiller of the FBI's Los Angeles office said.

"I'm not going to get into the entire investigation, but we don't want to rule out that he may have gone in another direction," she said.

When asked if Ivens' had his wallet and cellphone, Eimiller said that only his service weapon appears to be missing.

Ivens is not under any type of disciplinary action by the FBI and by all accounts is a reliable agent, Eimiller said.

We may be certain the FBI will tell a tale having nothing to do with the truth.

An FBI agent missing since last Friday seemed dazed and out of it late last week, a neighbor reported.

Sharon Goewert, a resident who lives a few blocks away from Ivens' home, said she bumped into him Thursday night. She had only met the agent once earlier this year during her daily walk through the neighborhood.
She described him as seeming dazed and staggering on the sidewalk. She said she reported what she saw to the FBI.

I can't place it but the "dazed and confused" phenomenon rings a bell. Wasn't there a video of a "dazed and confused" person who shortly thereafter was found dead? Seems like 2 or 3 months ago.

Family of missing FBI agent asks for help in search

BURBANK - The family of a missing FBI agent on Wednesday asked for volunteers to help search for him over Father's Day weekend.

Special Agent Steven Ivens disappeared May 10 after leaving his Burbank home with his service weapon. Police dogs tracked his footsteps to the base of the Verdugo Mountains.
"It is my fear that this case has gone cold," said his wife, Thea Ivens, 40, of Burbank, during a news conference at the Stough Canyon trailhead. "We're appealing for your help."

The 6-foot-1 agent, who turns 36 today, had been depressed and on the verge of a breakdown over events at work unrelated to his criminal caseload, she said.
He couldn't sleep, she said, and had anxiety attacks each morning before work.

She said he had sought therapy before he disappeared and was considering checking into a hospital for help. Before he left, he wrote a "gratitude message" for his wife and their 2 1/2-year-old son, Kyle.

Thea Ivens and Stephen's uncle have been combing Verdugo Mountain trails and soup lines, food pantries and homeless shelters across the region for a month, to no avail.

With TV cameras rolling, she appealed directly to her missing husband.
"Please, Steve baby, I love you," she said. "I miss you. Please let me know that you're OK."

it is unimaginable that the fbi and all the local LA resources cannot find this man whose disappearance was reported within just hours of his wandering off- [if he wandered off.]
it is beyond unimaginable that the fbi would abandon the search for its own agent, esp in such a short time and esp b/c his work related to national security.
he's either dead [in which case, he didnt bury himself, so i dont see how it is possible that the body cannot be located IF it was suicide], or he is alive and running from something and probably being protected by someone. if the latter is the case, it is inconceivable that every available cia/fbi/nsa/etc agency is not very actively searching for him.

BURBANK, Calif. (KABC) -- The body of missing FBI agent Stephen Ivens has been found in a wooded area in Burbank, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Authorities say the family has been notified. An official identification of the body will be done by the coroner's office.

Ivens, 35, was last seen on May 10 near his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road.

On Monday night, two hikers walking in the foothills above Burbank smelled a suspicious odor in the 3600 block of Scott Road. They found what appeared to be human remains and immediately called police.

Police said a weapon was recovered at the scene.

Before becoming an FBI agent three years ago, Ivens was an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department for eight years. He has a wife and a 1-year-old baby.

The recovery actually appears to have been on Scott Way above Scott Road, which goes through brushy area by surrounded residential areas.
