He was called 'Lonely George'

because he was the very last surviving of his species - the Giant Galapagos Tortoise. He died yesterday and his species is no more. He was well known in the Galapagos Environmental Preserve and was about 100 years old [they usually live to be about 200]. You can find many stories about him and his death on the internet. However, every day, on average between 250-350 species go extinct at this time. The natural extinction rate is would be about 1-2 per day; meaning humans are now killing off life on the planet [forever] at 200+ x the background/natural rate....and the rate is rapidly increasing! It is predicted to be at 500 species per day in less than ten years...then 1000 per day....then 5000, then 10,000 and so on....in five year increments. Meanwhile at the Rio +20 summit nothing is being done despite some wonderful speeches by non-governmental entities and persons. Mr. Obama chose not to even attend.
We humans may join George in extinction as a species sooner, rather than later....... Listen to some intelligent young voices!
