"Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped
us into misery and bloodshed."
Charlie Chaplin - 'The Great Dictator' -

"We lost our Paradise in a mad rush to victories in wars around the world and "security"
in atomic and hydrogen bombs and in a paroxysm of modernity which swept away much
of our ancient cultural wisdom and family and social foundations."
Jack D. Douglas

"The world says: "You have needs -- satisfy them. You have as much right as the
rich and the mighty. Don't hesitate to satisfy your needs; indeed, expand your
needs and demand more." This is the worldly doctrine of today. And they believe
that this is freedom. "
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

like to have."

Yes, thanks Adele....a very good and infamous speech by Chaplin...and the one more than most of his other actions/words/art which got him in 'hot water' with the reactionary authorities in the USA who eventually went after him for taxes he didn't own and then blocked his entry into the USA. He chose to live the end of his life in Switzerland with this wife and children. He was too moral a man to have in the USA, sadly. :mexican: Of course the FBI spied on him and suspected him of being a 'red' for his humanity and care for same.....some things never change....this still goes on with one change...add DHS and perhaps the electronic spy agencies to the mix.

Chaplin's Great Dictator was anti-fascist before it was fashionable in High Places http://ics-www.leeds.ac.uk/papers/pmt/ex...obCole.pdf

Newly released documents show that MI5, the British spy agency, helped the FBI retrieve information on the silent film star Charlie Chaplin.

Classified files released to the public Friday at the British National Archives show that the FBI asked MI5 for information to help the agency ban him from the US during the early 1950s says the Guardian.

The information, gathered mainly through eavesdropping, suggests that the FBI asked the British spy agency to find out Chaplin's orgins, according to the Independent.

Yet, British authorities appeared unable to find any records of the star's birth, which was believed to have happened in South London in 1889 - just four days before the birth of Adolph Hitler whom he parodied in "The Great Dictator."

According to the Daily Mail, MI5 officers concluded: "It would seem that Chaplin was either not born in this country or that his name at birth was other than those mentioned," leading to further speculation that "Charlie Chaplin" was simply an alias.

The documents also reveal that both spy agencies sought in vain to find Chaplin's connection with the Communist party and the Soviet Union.

"Chaplin has given funds to communist front organisations … He has been involved in paternity and abortion cases," the Indepenent quoted an MI5 liaison officer in Washington as writing in 1952.

According to the Guardian the MI5 report concludes that: "It may be that Chaplin is a communist sympathiser but on the information before us he would appear to be no more than a 'progressive', or radical."

Chaplin was banned from the US in 1953 and lived the rest of his life in Vevey, Switzerland.

Moral of the story: If you don't have a FBI file, you are likely not doing enough good work for the People or the Planet.

Do look at the video of the film or just the speech at the end, which in totality is:
----------------------

I'm sorry but I don't want to be an Emperor, that's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate;
has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.

We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in:
machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical,
our cleverness hard and unkind.
We think too much and feel too little:
More than machinery we need humanity;
More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness.

Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

The airplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me I say "Do not despair".

The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress: the hate of men will pass and dictators die and the power they took from the people, will return to the people and so long as men die [now] liberty will never perish. . .

Soldiers: don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel, who drill you, diet you, treat you as cattle, as cannon fodder.

Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts. You are not machines. You are not cattle. You are men. You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate, only the unloved hate. Only the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers: don't fight for slavery, fight for liberty.

In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written:
- "The kingdom of God is within man"
Not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men; in you, the people.

You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy let's use that power, let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie. They do not fulfil their promise, they never will. Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfil that promise. Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.

Soldiers! In the name of democracy: let us all unite!

Peter,

Thanks for that original clip from the movie, "The Great Dictator." It would be wondeerful to see that movie again.

Charlie Chaplin was greatly admired and respected as an actor in the US before the 1950s and the McCarthy Period. When I was in grammar school, we were shown silent movies by Chaplin as a treat just about every few weeks.

During the 1950s Americans were so intimidated and confused about communism that they did not recognize well-known excerpts taken from the US Declaration of Independence. Some college political science classes had projects performing surveys, asking people to sign petitions that were made up exclusively from the Declaration of Independence. Most people refused to sign these petitions in the belief that they were communist propaganda!
