CIA Director General Petraeus Resigns
#31
David Petraeus CIA scandal engulfs US commander Allen

The Pentagon is investigating the top US commander in Afghanistan, Gen John Allen, for sending potentially "inappropriate" emails to a woman linked to ex-CIA director David Petraeus, defence officials say.

Gen Allen is said to have sent the emails to Jill Kelley, a married socialite from Tampa, Florida. She had already been named in the Petraeus scandal after she told the FBI she had received anonymous harassing emails.

Gen Allen, a four-star Marine general, succeeded Gen Petraeus as the top American commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.

Defence Secretary Leon Panetta says the FBI referred the matter to the Pentagon on Sunday.

Gen Allen, who denies any wrongdoing, will remain in his job.

David Petraeus resigned on Friday after admitting to an extramarital affair.

Mr Panetta said in a statement given to reporters flying with him to Australia that he asked that Gen Allen's pending nomination to be Nato's supreme allied commander in Europe be delayed and that President Barack Obama agreed.

He ordered a Pentagon investigation of Gen Allen on Monday, and said he requested that the US Senate Armed Services Committee move promptly on the nomination for Gen Allen's successor in Afghanistan, Gen Joseph Dunford.

Investigation timeline

Early summer - Jill Kelley complains to FBI friend of harassing emails - government official
Late summer - FBI establish emails come from Paula Broadwell, and that she has had an affair with David Petraeus - government official
21 Oct - FBI interview Ms Broadwell - government official
Oct 22-29 - FBI interview Gen Petraeus - FBI official
6 Nov - FBI inform James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, of Petraeus affair. Mr Clapper speaks to Gen Petraeus
7 Nov - Mr Clapper informs White House
8 Nov - White House informs President Obama. He speaks to Gen Petraeus
9 Nov - President Obama accepts Gen Petraeus' resignation. Congressional committees informed

Gen Allen was due to face a Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday for his appointment as Nato commander in Europe.

Mr Panetta praised the general's work in Afghanistan, saying his leadership has been "instrumental" in securing progress in the war against Taliban insurgents.

Gen Allen is said to have sent the emails to Jill Kelley, a married socialite from Tampa, Florida. She had already been named in the Petraeus scandal after she told the FBI she had received anonymous harassing emails.

Mrs Kelley is said to have received threatening emails from Paula Broadwell, the woman with whom Mr Petraeus had an extramarital affair.

A senior Pentagon official said up to 30,000 pages of emails and other documents from Gen Allen's communications with Mrs Kelley between 2010 and 2012 were under review by the Pentagon.

Mrs Kelley has been described as an unpaid social liaison at the MacDill Air Force Base based in Tampa, Florida, which is headquarters of the US Central Command.

BBC is reporting that Allan might well have had an affair with Kelley.....how that plays into all this should prove interesting!

I'm still working out how Gen Allen fits in to all this, or even if he does. But some thing to consider.... Petraeus was in Iraq at the same time Col Ted Westhusing was. Col Westhusing was a much loved (by whom?) ethical professor of philosophy. He was in charge of the contracts and contract compliance under Petraeus. Obviously the contract situation was a huge bonanza for some. Col Westhusing supposedly committed suicide. But there is some discrepancy about the ammunition used. Did Petraeus reveal to his mistress/biographer Paula Broadwell a fellow West Point graduate no less, information about the death of Westhusing? Or other unusual deaths?

Interesting speculation there, Magda. I'm sure in this and any other war [which after all is all about money outside and death inside the war zone] many a 'supposed' fellow soldier has been snuffed for knowing too much about the wrong thing[s] - or playing it by the rules, when others were not, etc. This could open up a virtual Pandora's Box of dirty little secrets and murders, etc.....

As far as Allan, 30,000 pages of emails and other documents from Gen Allen's communications with Mrs Kelley between 2010 and 2012 are now be looked at....that's a lot of emails and documents!...and Kelley for reasons not yet revealed was getting angry [not threatening] emails from Broadwell. Now, there is near confirmation that Allan and Kelley were having an affair at some point [unknown timing]...so there is a very strange confluence of all these people...and Allan replaced Petraeus, so must have learned most secrets he had known...and maybe a few new ones. They all seem to have at one time [and at overlapping times?] served [Kelley as a 'hostess'] at MacDill Air Force Base based in Tampa, Florida, which is headquarters of the US Central Command.....stay tuned and watch the body counts [suicides, of course].....

ABC station botches Petraeus book cover: "ALL Up IN My Snatch"

An ABC News affiliate in Denver says that while attempting to report on the resignation of former CIA Director David Petraeus, the station mistakenly aired a photoshopped version of his mistress' book with the raunchy title "All Up In My Snatch."

KMGH-TV producer Deb Stanley told Raw Story that the wrong book cover had been "mistakenly picked up off the Internet" and aired during their 5 p.m. broadcast on Monday. Instead of displaying the actual book cover of Paula Broadwell's Petraeus biography, "All In," KMGH-TV aired the parody cover, "All Up In My Snatch."

"That actually happened and it was a mistake," Stanley explained. "And it was not something we created. We don't want that mistake out there."

While the KMGH-TV did not post the segment on its website, a viewer captured video of the broadcast and provided it to Americablog.

And it was clear from comments posted on KMGH's TheDenverChannel.com that several other viewers also caught the mistake.

"Not sure at all where you got your picture of Broadwell's book for your 5pm news cast," one viewer wrote. "I AM sure the title is NOT ALL up IN my snatch' the education of General David Patraeus' as you showed. I believe it is simply titled "All In". Clever photoshopping by someone - not so clever use of sources for a news cast!"

"I saw it too!" another viewer added. "I have been looking for, at the very least, an apology from 7 News. I hope someone's head is on the chopping block; this was inexcusable behavior."
Stanley could not confirm to Raw Story whether an apology or correction would be forthcoming from the station.

Watch this video from KMGH-TV, broadcast Nov. 12, 2012.

:gossip:Amazing.....now Broadwell will be even richer when her attorney sues! This entire affair is getting rather raunchy...but it was from the start it seems. This is tabloid fare about the most important positions in the government and military.....Hollywood couldn't come up with anything close to this. Reality is stranger and raunchier than fiction.

BOHICA - GATE.

Gen Allen's defence appears to be that he sent 30,000 pages of smutty emails - not a single military matter mentioned at all.....

When did this man have time for his military duties?!
