While I agree with the premise of the article there are a couple of things bother me about this. One is that it implies there is a group called 'scientists' and another called 'people' as if scientists aren't people and that it is the people who self select their groups and as if scientist don't. 'Conservatives' are quite aware of the potential to use and manipulate social media. These things don't take place in an ideological vacuum. Fortunately most, but not all, scientists are in touch with reality.
