Last night's CNN program 'The 60's' has warmed up a little in the coverage of JFK. If you watched the two Kennedy episodes there has been a noticeable shift in their coverage of Kennedy, his administration, and his assassination. It is obvious that the CNN producers have been reading criticism of their Kennedy coverage because they have made noticeable changes to their previous offerings.
The Bay of Pigs was openly shown as a CIA-controlled operation that was kept secret from Kennedy and compromised him. Although CNN left out the fact Hoover helped Johnson blackmail his way into the Vice Presidency they did suggest Johnson was crooked and it impacted Kennedy. They had Dallek say this.
If you can catch this show do so and take notes. There are two episodes. One is president Kennedy's battles with Khrushchev and the Cold War and all the crises he faced. It ended with coverage of Viet Nam that broke precedent and admitted Kennedy was going to withdraw from Viet Nam against the wishes of almost everybody else in government. They even said Johnson completely reversed Kennedy's Viet Nam policy. Quote: "The US went from a president that resisted the majority government view towards Viet Nam to one that served it". This is tantamount to admitting a motive for Kennedy's assassination.
This new CNN tack was shocking it was so different from the propaganda of the anniversary coverage. However it was still well short of the ugly truth.
I noticed they are trying a new angle and suggesting everyone is a little dirty.
