Not all of the military personnel was happy with this kind of "warfare". As an example, F16 pilot Keith Rosenkranz in his book "Vipers in the Storm" describes his mixed feelings when he was ordered to kill these people who were clearly in retreat.
It is like shooting fleeing people in the back.

Rosenkranz left the military after the war and had a long carreer in civil aviation.
The most relevant literature regarding what happened since September 11, 2001 is George Orwell's "1984".
