Ray was both the smartest, and the most liberal of Castro's enemies while he was in Cuba. In fact, he had a top job as a structural engineer.
The Kennedys and Schlesinger liked Ray because he was a liberal, especially when compared to some of the right-wingers that Howard Hunt had recruited e.g. Manuel Artime. Hunt despised Ray. He called his ideas Castrosim without Fidel. But the Kennedys pushed him into the forefront. Hunt left the Zapata operation over this, but only ostensibly.
On the day of the invasion, two interesting things happened. Hunt was at CIA HQ along with Phillips, getting instant radio updates.
Hunt's alleged Cuban government called the CRC, which now included Ray, was held prisoner in a Miami airfield, under armed guard. Turns out, this was the beginning of Operation Forty.
That is why the Cubans were at Odio's door 8 weeks before the assassination. Because of her association with Ray, which went back to her father, who Castro was holding prisoner on the Isle of Pines.
There is a lot I have to say about this, but I'll keep most of it under my hat for now, also, there couldn't have been too much going on in way of raido updates due to the fact the CIA had cut all radio transmission and Osvaldo Cello who was on the ship Barbara J told others in the brigade this story.
When the ships were about to reach Cuban waters president Kennedy had order radio silence this is also most likely due so no one would know anything about the delaying the A4 Skyhawks, no one in the brigade would know.
We know that the ship Barbara J was infact a ship named after George Bush's wife, J being the middle name of Barbara which is Jean.
