I didn't realise he owns a home there and that makes it even stranger. I find his crime repulsive but if he has conducted himself appropriately since then and if his victim has in some way come to terms with it and does not wish to pursue the matter I don't see why he had to be arrested now or ever. There have been plenty of other times and places he could have been arrested. Why don't they do something really useful and go and arrest Bush and Cheney and the Prince of Darkness instead of leaving it to the Spanish judge?
Polanski drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl he had booked for a photoshoot at the home of Jack Nicholson.
"Hollywood morals" is no defence. So, like you, I find his crime repulsive and morally indefensible.
I also have seen and heard enough to suspect that Polanski is a deeply disturbed and potentially violent individual. Whilst I agree with Peter that the Manson Family was a "strategy of tension" experiment, their victims were not randomly chosen.
There was some deeply nasty stuff going on in the Hollywood circles in which Polanski and the puppet Manson moved. Maury Terry turned over the rock to expose the underside, and everyone screamed and ran for cover....
Having said all that, the timing is interesting given Polanski's frequent trips to Switzerland.
If only the same effort was put into bringing war criminal politicians to justice...
