I didn't realise he owns a home there and that makes it even stranger. I find his crime repulsive but if he has conducted himself appropriately since then and if his victim has in some way come to terms with it and does not wish to pursue the matter I don't see why he had to be arrested now or ever. There have been plenty of other times and places he could have been arrested. Why don't they do something really useful and go and arrest Bush and Cheney and the Prince of Darkness instead of leaving it to the Spanish judge?
Polanski drugged and raped a 13-year-old girl he had booked for a photoshoot at the home of Jack Nicholson.
"Hollywood morals" is no defence. So, like you, I find his crime repulsive and morally indefensible.
I also have seen and heard enough to suspect that Polanski is a deeply disturbed and potentially violent individual. Whilst I agree with Peter that the Manson Family was a "strategy of tension" experiment, their victims were not randomly chosen.
There was some deeply nasty stuff going on in the Hollywood circles in which Polanski and the puppet Manson moved. Maury Terry turned over the rock to expose the underside, and everyone screamed and ran for cover....
Having said all that, the timing is interesting given Polanski's frequent trips to Switzerland.
If only the same effort was put into bringing war criminal politicians to justice...
The powers that be have had 32 years to 'bring him to justice' if that is what is needed. He served the agreed-upon two months in prison, but in ways not fully clear the Judge, after release, reneged on the plea-bargain. A Judge a year ago said that he saw large areas of judicial malfeasance in the original trial, but that he wouldn't rule without Polanski there, in person. While I can understand someone wanting to leave the USA's 'Justice' system [cough, cough] before 9-11, since, I can't imagine any sane person who'd readily submit to it....whatever strange things Polanski might have or have not been involved in or with. It smacks of O.J. Justice to me......and some points for the Swiss. I think in such a case one needs to look at ALL the factors involved. A coincidence that someone involved in Tate's murder died recently and can't tell all? I wonder....cynical 'ol me. No one is excusing his behavior....but I find it slightly less of a crime than those of, say, W, Rummy, Chaney, et al.....no one's going after them...not even a gesture of same....not to mention the innocent framed or railroaded and rotting in prison.
