Despite widespread public distrust of GM foodstuffs in the UK over the last 5 or 6 years - to the point of rejecting it virtually entirely - it always seemed inevitable that it was going to be introduced, to the same extent that it always seemed inevitable that Tony Blair was going to go to war against Iraq, despite the greatest public protest in British history against getting involved in a war.
When politicians go against a very vocal public protest you can be sure that there are other pressures placed on them to make them do that.
