The same has been found in the Antarctic. The weight and temperature of the ice has keep the clathrate-methane solid in the sediments below the ice. Now the decreased weight [in some places loss of it entirely] and increased temperatures has allowed the increasing release of this clathrate-methane, which changes from a solid to a gas in violent large bubbles. This goes immediately into the atmosphere and causes increased capture of heat - causing a positive feedback loop. Times the same happened in the Earth's past, this led to VERY long periods of tropical or near tropical weather over the entire planet and much higher ocean levels with no or almost no ice on the Planet.
Clathrate-methane is also released by seabed drilling for oil, and has been found at most ocean drill rigs. It was even caught on camera at the BP-Gulf of Mexico spill.
At the rate humans are going, viable terraformed places to live on Mars will not be available by the time we destroy Earth's capacity to support human [and most other] life here. The sun was not going to destroy the Planet's habitability for several Billion years...but we have found a way to destroy it well before that..and only a few thousand years into what passes for civilization and 175 years into the 'technological age'. The native peoples were correct and the 'technological societies' are insane and self-destructive. To have climate change deniers at the helm in the most powerful nation now is a very sad way to see the Planet's end at hand.
"Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish."
