Inconsolable Organizations and the Tyranny of Corporatism
#2
Postscript.

This is a much repeated story from BBC News & Current Affairs, which I have considerable reason to believe is true in its essentials.

In the late 90s, during yet another phase of "radical restructuring", the new Head of BBC Newsgathering gathered hundreds of staff - reporters, producers, researchers etc - together and told them that he was now in charge and things were going to be different. There was a new set of rules, and everybody was expected to abide by them.

A reporter asked: "And what happens if we object to some of these rules?"

The Head of Newsgathering paused for dramatic effect and then slowly replied: "It's simple. You can Fit In or Fuck Off."

There was a chilly silence in the hall. Then people started slipping out, back to their desks.

None of the massive egos of BBC News & Current Affairs challenged this manager.

The psychological shock created by this man telling them all that they were dispensable cowed them into uneasy silence.

The Head of Newsgathering's speech was soon absorbed into a jolly little acronym. He became known internally as Mr FIFO.

Mr Fit In or Fuck Off.

Never to his face though.
