Hal Verb
#8
I encountered Hal on numerous occasions during Lancer conferences. His verbosity was enough to drive one to drink -- if, that is, one had not already arrived.

Groans would be heard from conference veterans whenever Hal approached a microphone during a Q&A session. I found him to be well-informed if predisposed to declaring the obvious with a sense of discovery.

That being said, I am saddened to learn of his passing. As a matter of faith and expression of reason, I am certain that he is now trying to explain away the whole atheism thing.

If an individual, through either his own volition or events over which he had no control, found himself taking up residence in a country undefined by flags or physical borders, he could be assured of one immediate and abiding consequence: He was on his own, and solitude and loneliness would probably be his companions unto the grave.
-- James Lee Burke, Rain Gods

You can't blame the innocent, they are always guiltless.  All you can do is control them or eliminate them.  Innocence is a kind of insanity.
