This looks like excellent information. I haven't had time to sort through it all with a clear head yet, but will do so. I only note that University of Pennsylvania had some interesting faculty besides the person you mention. I believe Nabokov wrote Lolita while there.
On CNN, I'm not certain, but I began seeing it on cable after the broadcast day for WTBS ended, and the first stories I remember are Solidarnosc and Pope John Paul II and Reagan and Hinckley. Jaruwelski and Walesa were regularly featured stories and the former's declaration of martial law in Poland. I hadn't heard of Mae Brussel then of course, and several months passed before I heard about Reagan's scorched earth policy in Central America.
