Lessons of the Past
by Abby Zimet
Today marks the 35th anniversary of the fall, or liberation, of Saigon, and the end of the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese celebrated by re-enacting the event. For some of us of a certain age, the date remains key, a vibrant memory. For Jonathan Schell, writing just before the surge in Afghanistan, it remains a grievous lesson to be heeded. For any reasonably attentive student of history, it remains worth revisiting with the present in mind. Some of the war's most iconic and searing images are here.
