Interesting book review. George H W Bush really didn't like the Birchers, I think he even coined the term "the lunatic fringe" in their honour. He had to hide his own eugenecist views regarding abortion and population control during his White House stints to keep his "constituency" (if he actually had any) in line. No different than Clinton or Soetoro saying one thing and doing the opposite, I suppose.
