Israeli ships suffer almost no piracy because they have armed security details. This is somewhat of a difficulty for ships flying under other flags because many countries don't want armed crews putting to port, but Israel never has to worry about this for some reason. Obviously ship crews have the right to defend themselves on the high seas. If the Gaza flotilla had been serious about self-defence, they could've taken down some of the Israeli helicopters rather easily, harpooning lines upward to catch on the propellor blades.
